Cleveland, ()., Sept. 7.
Jonas Hunkiu was murdered
late last night at Luis Bans,
iu the Southeastern pari of the
city. He went into the place
and found there August Guern-
er, Valentine lloetcr, Adam
Seldernage, Wilheliu Ban aud
Fit/. Ban. An eye witness of
the a Hail tells the story as fol-
lows: Iiunkin came in where
Uuerner and the crowd were;
(fiierner began abusing Hun-
kiu because his little girl had
thrown a glass over into his
yard and lii.s children had hurt
themselves noon it. Hunkiu
denied that sue had done so
and declared he was not re-
sponsible in any case. One of
the crowd accused Hunkiu of
stealing chickens, which lie de-
clared lie had lost. Hunkiu de
clared lie had not stolen them.
The crowd kept, talking and ac-
cusing him of ill treatment of
his neighbors. They became
more and more boisterous aud
frequent threats were made
against him. The crowd seem-
ed determined to >tir up a light.
Finally it became too hot for
him in the saloon and lie start
ed to go out when one of the
men rushed after him and
struck him with a knife across
the right side of the neck, ser
vering the jugular vein aud
making a gash six inches h>ug.
Hunkin cried out, "I am killed,"
"they have murdered me" ami
staggering into the center of
the street fell upon the railway
track. All were arrested ex-
cept Wilheliu Ran, who fled
