Fire, which began in the storeroom
Of the shops of the Trinity and Brazos
Valley railroad Monday, at Teague,
Texas, did damage which local rail-
road men estimate at in the neighbor-
hood of $400,000.
A verdict of guilty, with a death
penalty, was returned Saturday at
San Antonio, Texas, against Leon
Johnson, an 18-year-old negro, for the
murder of Dr. Augustus Maverick.
The Texas state automatic tax
board, consisting of the governor,
treasurer and controller, met at Aus-
tin Saturday and fixed the state tax
rates for the ensuing year. The state
ad valorem tax went to 23c. It was
10c last year. The state school tax
was fixed at 17c, an increase of one-
third of a cent on each $100 of valua-
tion. The constitution fixes the Con-
federate pension tax at a maximum of
5c. The total state taxes to be paid
this year will be 45c.
An effort will be made this week,
according to confidants of Governor .
Sulzer of New York, to procure the !
indictment of several members of the j
legislature who were most active in |
the impeachment of the governor, and
also of certain men high in Tammany
Hall who are not officially connected
with the legislature. One of the
charges, it is said, will be criminal
conspiracy.
In the prohibition election held at
Donna, Texas, the voted stood 62
against prohibition to 61 for the meas-
ure.
John W. Young, a cowboy heavy-
weight pugilist, died in a hospital at
Los Angeles, Cal., Sunday of injuries
received at Vernon arena Saturday
night when he was, knocked out by
Jess Willard.
Governor Colquitt filed his messages
with the secretary of state Saturday,
vetoing part of all the appropriation
bills, the total eliminated being $3,429,-
325, leaving the appropriation bill
carrying $11,639,025, instead of the
original $15,068,350.
Dr. A. C. Oliver of Cass County,
Texas, was Thursday named as super-
intendent of the Confederate home in
place of Major Lyles, resigned.
Mrs. W. L. Van Venroy, mother of
twenty-three children, 150 grandchil-
dren and twenty-five great-grandchii-
dren, died Friday at Green Bay, Wis.
A deadly charge Of dynamite—three
whole ten-inch sticks and two halves,
with, a fuse and detonator—was dis-
covered Thursday near Mayor Gay-
nor's office window in the city hall,
New York. The amount found would,
if exploded, have wrecked the city
ball.

Harry K. Thaw's Canadian attorneys
Tuesday withdrew the writ of habeas
corpus obtained last week in his be-
half and the fugitive from Matteawan
will not be arraigned in the superior
court as had been expected. The with-
drawal of the writ may prolong the
proceedings indefinitely.
Michael Maybrick, English com-
poser, who, under the name of Stephen
Adams, wrote some of the most popu-
lar songs in the English language,
among them "Nancy Lee," "The War-
rior Bold" and "The Holy City," died
Tuesday at Buxton, England, aged 69.
The Mexican government and jefes
politicos have been instructed by the
minister of the interior, Dr. Urrutia,
to organize and drill all able-bodied
men and to report to the capital the
number of organizations and the con-
dition of the men.
The Servian government has de-
clined to co-operate with the Carnegie
commission investigating alleged Bal-
kan atrocities on account of the pres-
ence among the members of Professor
Paul N. Milukoff, leader of the con-
stitutional democrats in the Russian
duma.
A dispatch from Constantinople to
London Monday gives details of the
negotiations of Turkey and Bulgaria,
by which it is said the latter has re-
linquished claim to Adrianople for
compensation elsewhere.
President Wilson's personal repre-
sentative, John Lind, left the Mexican
capital Tuesday, proceeding to Vera
Cruz. Mr. Lind called on Foreign
Minister Gamboa Monday to say good-
bye, but there was nothing in their
conversation regarding the resump-
tion of negotiations or to indicate
that Mexico would recede from her po-
sition.
Prince William Frederick Hermann
Otto Charles of Wied, Germany, head
of the Wied family, said to have been
chosen by the European powers for
the Albanian throne, is a nephew of
Carmen Sylva, queen of Roumania.
He is 41 years of age, and married
Princess Pauline of Wurtemberg in
1898.
Grossbeeren, a village twelve miles
south of Berlin, Germany, Saturday
celebrated the centenary of the battle
of Grossbeeren, which saved Berlin
from French ocoupatlon and resulted
in Napoleon's first defeat of the cam-
paign which ended in the battle of
the nations at Lelpslc.
An eight-inch naval gun burst dur-
ing a test Friday at Pola, Austria,
killing three officers, fatally wounding
six others and injuriny a score more.
General Porfirio Diaz, former presi-
dent of Mexico, accompanied by his
wife and other members of his family
and General Jose Miguel Gomez, for-
mer president of Cuba, left Interlaken,
Switzerland, Saturday for Lucerne and
will later proceed to Paris.
"Two million women in America
protest against the fortification of the
Panama canal," was the assertion
made Saturday before the peace con-
gress at The Hague by Mrs. May
Wright Sewall of Indianapolis. She

delegates.
