FERRIS, ELLITS COUNTY, TEXAS, SATURDAY, AUG. 28, 1897.
A Scare at the Ferris Wheel.
Chicago Chronicle: Several
persons had a narrow escape from
'pending a night in one of the
car
of the Ferris wheel Tuesdat
evening. One o ,ihe pipes that
feeds the boiler with oil gave out
along with two exhaust pipes at
6; o'clock. In the only car occupied
thirty men and women
were maniing the trip around the
,ig wbeel. When the oil gave
out the steam fell from 120 to 40
pounds in a few seconds. Manager
Rice succeeded in backing
the car with the people to the
:-tand jut as the steam gave out.
5 second later and the peeple
would either have been compelled
to stay in the car over night or
be removed by rope ladders. One
of the occupants was a woman
xk ho weighs 300 pounds.
The Comr:1naches who have
mic_ ,-han one wife were ready
to go on the warpath when the
order was issued by the government
that they would be allowed
to have but one. The attorney
general has since ruled that the
law does not apply to existing
jpolvgamists, but the young bucks
wiil not -)e allow ea rO take linut
,ne squlaw to wife. This is a
sensible ruling, 1,ut the Mormons
were not treated with so much
considerations Mormons were
>sent to the penmentiary because
they would not give up theirwives. HIowever whi
