First Congregational Church Early History
The officers selected at this time were as follows:
Trustees: E. M. Powell, G. A. Trumbull, Arthur Geen, Thomas T. Holloway, Alex Watson,
W. Y. McCune, John F. Worley
Clerk: George W. Achilles
Treasurer: John Henry Craven
Sunday School Superintendent: William G. Breg
The Recognition Service was held November 20, 1902. Rev. C. E. Paxton of Paris, Texas,
preached, and W. E. Reed of Kansas City delivered the Church Address and served as
Moderator. The churches invited to be present were:
Grand Avenue Congregational Church
Paris Congregational Church
Palestine Congregational Church
Sherman Congregational Church
Dallas Congregational Church
Cleburne Congregational Church
Plans were made at once to erect a new church at the corner of Commerce and Preston Streets, at
an approximate cost of $19,000.00 of which $13,000.00 was to be raised by the church, and a
loan of $6,000.00 obtained from the Congregational Building Society. The lot was purchased for
$3,500.00
By November 11, 1903, the total subscriptions toward a new church were $11,528.00 with
$9,885.46 having been paid. The total cost of the building was estimated at $19,000.00. The
Sunday School rooms were finished by December 10, 1903, and the first meetings were held on
that date. The auditorium was not used until a little later, as pews and furniture were late in
arriving.
