In 1966 members of the Founders Garden Club of Dallas also became involved
with the effort to save Millermore. Mr. Conger had spoken to them regarding the
danger of the home being torn down. These members initiated the saving of Millermore
and contributed toward the work.
Even after the founding of the Dallas County Heritage Society, legal difficulties
were encountered. Needing the ground space for their new church building, the Good
Street congregation joined with the Phil Millers to deed Millermore to the City of Dallas
through the instrumentality of the Heritage Society. The city, through its Park Board,
agreed to accept the gift, provided the structure was moved to City Park and restored to
a safe and satisfactory condition. A contract had been let to dismantle Millermore if it
was not promptly claimed by movers. The society was forced to take strenuous steps
both in and out of court to halt this destruction.
Under the direction of Mrs. Sawnie R. Aldredge, the society completed the
removal of the old pioneer Dallas home from its original location and carried out its
complete restoration in Old City Park.
During the week of 3-6 September 1997, the Federation of Genealogical
Societies, along with the Dallas Genealogical Society, will host their annual conference.
This year it will be held in Dallas, Texas. On Saturday, 6 September 1997, from 6:30 -
10:00 p.m., a special event entitled An Evening to Remember at Old City Park will be
held. Those attending will be invited back-in-time to celebrate Dallas as it was 100 years
ago and step through the doors of Millermore. See and feel the stately old mansion as
William Brown Miller saw and felt it during his lifetime there. Visualize Mr. Miller
sitting on the big back porch, rocking in his chair. Imagine him napping on the day bed
in the upstairs hallway, where the large window could catch a passing summer breeze,
after his noonday meal. Relive life in Millermore.
