Captain Salvaut, of the steamer In-

Olsen place, and will immediately, or

The M. K. & T. meat market has
just completed a tasty new house on
Avenue A and Will run a branch
establishment at the new location.
Father Murphy, of Houston, held
services in the Catholic church of this
city Tuesday night and Wednesday

A number of wing dams will he
constructed along the river immedi-
ately. This will have a tendency to
confine the channel to the center of
the river.
John F. Lawder, a substantial far-
mer, this week jiurchased a tract of
land on Gulf prairie from Perry &
Bryan. He will soon move his family
here and improve his holdings.
Mr. Hawkins is coiling and improv-
ing his building on Avenue A. It
will be occupied as soon as completed
by the Two Brothers saloon, aud will
be one of the neatest places in the
city. _
P.F. Combs & Co, advertise to
pay the ferriage of all customers who
buy as much as $10 -worth of goods
from their house. This s^rtof enter-
prise will draw business to Velasco
which now goes to Brazoria.
Frank Leonard who recently left
Velasco in a sail boat for Chicago,
writes The Times that he passed
through the gulf with out any great
trouble, aud is now ascending the
father of waters.
G. W. Draper, a Kansas farmer of
easy means, has been spending a few
days in Velasco. He is well pleased
with the new deep water harbor, and
expects to buy land in Brazoria coun-
ty. What he buys lie will Improve,
and when he locates here others will
follow.
On the editorial page of this paper
will be found an interesting article on
the olive, from the -pen of W. F.
Clarke, a gentleman who spent many
years in California and is perfectly
familiar with his subject. He will
from time to time furnish our readers
with an article on horticulture.
Chop House Charlie is keeping up
with the prosession. He íb bound to
do business with everybody in town
and if they don't come to see him he
will go to see them. He has purchas-
ed an elegant Jossey wagon, and will
call at every residence in the city for
orders Charlie is a hustler and no
mistake.
A Are started in the upper story of
the Jones building, unjoining the
Schneider block Monday morning last,
but was almost immediately discov-
ered and was soon gotten under control
by M.M.Miller and R.E. Murrell. The
second story of the building is occu-
pied by the family of John McCall.
The fire was caused by a defective due.
It was a narrow escape from what
might have been a very disastrous
fire. Mayor Nation has asked Mr,
Miller to accept the position of chief
of the fire department.
The shoe factory at this place is
now completed.
Messrs. Angle, Morrisey and Col.
Taylor were in the city Friday.
Ed. Jewell and S. T. C'oldwater,
bo.h prominent citizens of Velasco,
were hereon a visit to friends Sunday.
The post iflice at this place has just
received a supply ot the Columbian
stumped envelopes, and they are cer-
tainly beauties.
Cute B. Henderson made a Hying
visit to Velasco Sunday.
W. Jack Bryan returned from his
ranch in Galveston count y lust Fri-
day.
Miss Laura Black and Mrs. Irwin
Bryan and family returned from Caney
Saturday.
Mr. C. K. Keese, Jr., from Velasco,
made two flying trips to this place In
the'lnst few dnys. There is evidently
some great attraction here for Keller.
Rev. John F. Sullivan preached a
very interesting sermon at the new
Methodist church Sunday morning,
and wound up by making it pretty
hot for some of our young folks that
are so much in the habit of attending
balls and kid dances.
Rev. Beaty (brother of our esteemed
townsman, A, D. Beaty,) also preach-
ed to a large audience that night at
the Presbyterian church.
Dr. Weiseger's familv have return-
ed from Caney, and tho Doctor looks
happy.
Mr. C. N, Hill has opened up his
billiard aud pool parlors.
Another grocery is establishing ill
town with J. G. Tilger us proprietor.
Mrs. N. J. King has returned to
Quintana after a pleasant visit to
Galveston.
Misses Emily Perry and Terese
Bryan returned from Houston last
Friday.
Mr. A. B. Harris, of the flrm of
Harris & Newton, contractors and
builders, of Dallas, Texas, who has
lately moved his family to this place,
is in tho city to-day, and reports that
the firm of Francis Smith & Co., who
have at leust ten million dollars in-
vested in Texus luuds, are having
built fifty cottages near Chenango,
and about 160 or more on the Wilson
which is also situatid in Brazoria
county. Mr. Harris is the firm's agent,
and is supervising the work at both
places.
The tug Mollle Molir, that was sold
several weeks ago, will be taken to
Houston the very first fair weather
wo have, as the gulf continues to be
very rough.
Rev. Mr. Hodge and Mr. Fred Rob-
bius leave for Galveston to-day, to at-
tend the Presbytery, which meets
in that city next Thursday.
Dr. E. S. Weisiger was disappoint-
ed in getting his life boat made at
Loug Island, as the party that was to
build it had so many contracts with
the World's Fair committee that it
was impossible for him to build the
boat. Nevertheless, the Doctor has
employed Mr. Locheed of this place,
who is a fine ship builder, to com-
mence work immediately on the boat,
so as to have it finished as soon as
possible.
L. C. Mecbam was on a visit to his
family here the other day, he is one of
the engineers on the Katy, stationed
at Sealy, Texas. He thinks that after
the company have their meeting this
month, that they will decide to come
to this place, which íb quite likely, as
we have the only deep water port on
the Texas coast.
The first and second grade of the
Quintana High School, will each give
an entertainment at the close of school
on the 23rd of May.
The schooner, Adelia, Summons
captain, loaded with cotton Beed,
shipped by Mr. John Craig, was
wrecked on the bar at the mouth of
Bernard river last week, and we are
told will prove a total loss.
Major Stinnett and family have
fono to Chicago on a short visit. Dr.
. D. McGregor and family left for
the same place yesterday, and a num-
ber of others will leave about the first
of next month, to attend the World's
Fair.
Messrs. John Meckols aud Philip
Smith and brother, of Matagorda
county, made a business trip to the
city yesterday.
Mrs. Dr. Fields and Mrs. Wolcot
from Velasco, were here Tuesday, sell-
ing tickets tor the concert given by
Ladies Aid Society of the Presby-
buildiug fund of the Presbyterian
church of Velasco. This drama has
been played extensively throughout
the south aud in every instance has
been well received.

The schoonor Kotie J. Irelun, John-
son, master, cleared Thursduy for
Apuluchicola, Florida, to load with
lumber for Boston.
The schooner Anna arrived Thurs-
day with a cargo of barb wire. She
suffered the loss of he foretopmasfc in
the late blow In the gulf. Her draft
Is 15 feet.
Barkentine Sanchez, from Balti-
more, with "argo of coal for Chambers'
elevator, urrived outside Thursduy.
The steamship Creswell left Tam-
Eico the 18th Inst, and is expected
ere this morning where a cargo for
Hamburg is ready.
The steamship Samuel Tyzack is
still discharging in Tampico and will
not get here for a week or so.
After the Samuel Tyzack will arrive
tho big Fuliwell, belonging ulso to
Messrs. Tyzack & Branfoot, Sunder-
land. The Fuliwell's net register Is
nearly 1000 tons, aud her length is
300 feet. She muy be followed By the
Springweil, another boat of the same
line, registering nearly 2000 tons, and
measuring 300 feet.
The schooner John (J. Smith,of Bos-
ton, Kneeland master, finished unload-
ing Saturday, and cleared Tuesday
morning for Apalachacola, Fla., to

train yesterday for Kansas and Ill-

W. C. Benborn aud wife, of Minne-
sota, are umong the recent urrlvuls In
Velasco. They expect to remain hero
permanently. Mr. Benborn is a law-
yer by profession, und at oue time
was county attorney of Cottonwood
county, Minnesota.
E. B. Noble visited Houston this
week lo replenish his slock of furni-
ture 'which has been going like hot
cakes for the past few weeks. Mr.
Noble will carry a complete stock,
from which our people can make their
selections without the expense of a
trip to the Magnolia city.
Col. Charles Edwards left Monday
last for Ogden, Utah, to attend u
meeting of the trans-Mississippi con-
gress. The colonel had been in a
rather thoughtful mood for several
days and the chances are that ho was
cogitating a speech setting forth
tho many advantages of Velasco as a
seaport.
M. A. Hawks,one of the live busi-
ness men of Chicago, who is doing a
little recruting and at tho satno time
advertising tho World's Fair, dropped
in on The Times Monday. Mr.
Hawks has traveled all over the
world and is u very entertaining and
observing gentleman. Ho thinks
Chicago tho only city in the world
but was strongly impressed with the
many uaturul advantages of Velasco,
which he thinks will soon be the
great city of Texus.

Mrs. M. G. Mills bought ten acres of

mlon, Jr., this week, and like all oth-

mence improving at once.

tonio Wednesday, where he had been
to officiate as best man at the wed-
ding of the popular nianuger of tho

In this city Monday last, Benjamin
Hill, the six-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. A. S. Hill.
The funeral occurred from the fami-
ly residence Tuesday morning.
Deceased was a bright and manly
little fellow, ami had won his way to
tlie hearts of many people in Velasco
who extern! their sympathy to the
bereaved parents.
O11 Thursday of last week deceased
Jumped from the gallery to the
ground several times, and as he was
quite a heavy child he fell und severe-
ly bruised his body in several places.
Friday morning he could not get out
of bed, and complained of numerous
bruises and pains. The bruises led to
lufiamation of the stomach, which cut
short the life of oue who gave promise
of becoming tho joy and prido of his
parents, anil a good and useful citizen.

Our streots were crowded on Wednes-
day with people from the country,
each wearing a huppy look because of
the recent ruin, and all say that the
prospects for a fine crop, both of corn
and cotton, were never better. Busi-
ness with our merchants is good, and
they too are happy.
Services last Sunday were well at-
tended, both at tho M. E. Church and
the Cospel teut. Rev. Mr. Watson
preached in the morniug, and after
the sermon a Baptist church was or-
ganized and will be known us the
Columbia Baptist Church. Rev. A.
J. Williams preached in the afternoon
and at night. At tho night services
many went up und gave their hand,
promising to lead Cliristuin lives.
Much Interest is being tuken, so much
so that services will be held to-ulglit,
and perhaps tomorrow night.
Mr. Collin Campbell, of Brazoriu,
(reporter in chief) wus in the city this
a. 111., on his way home. There Is
some very great attraction up this
way for Collin, and as he does not
stop in tho city tiie magnet must bo
lurlhoi up the Brazos. Watch, Col-
lin, some of these Columbia boys don't
lie attracted by the same magnet.
Some of tho Dumoud Mound t'urni-
ers are in town and report everything
going well up there. Not much rain
fell uud no damage wus done by the
storm Friday.
Mr. S. S. Mann, of Des Mollis, Iowa,
Is in tho city, and will remain several
days, looking at this section of the
county.
The Presbyterian Sunday School
will have their picnic 011 Weduesclay
next at tho Mound creek bridge.
Dr. Porter leaves for Galveston to-
day, being summoned as a witness in
the district court,
Mr. C. Gieslcke, who has been in
Hot Springs, Ark., for sovoral days
for his health, writes ho Is some better.
His many friends wish him a speedy
recovery, and that lie maybe home
stain, as his presence from his place of
business is sadly missed.
