It seems to be quite a favorite sport
ot a number of our citizens to set under
the brilliant arc lights and tempt the
fiuny tribe with bait aud line from
the wharf.
The brigantine Stacy i'lark cleared
and sailed yesterday morning for
Vera Cruz, Mexico, where she will
load with a cargo of mahogany and
red cedar for New York.

most pleasaut day we have had in

many warm friends in Velasco since

may make a quick run and a safe re-
turn.
The Steadman was detained at the
wharf yesterday morning nearly an
hour over her schedule time owing to
tlie fact that the fireman had taken
leave of the steamer without express-
ing his adieus. To say that Captain
Ward was mad would be expressing
it quite mildly.
J. A. Palmer, one of the former typos
of the Times olfice is recuperating in
Quintana. Mr. Palmer is a steady
and sober young man, and a good
printer and the boys of the Times
force will miss his good natured smile
and cheering words. May success at-
tend him in the business in which he
may engage.
L. W. Phillips, who has for some
time past had charge of the Times job
rooms, leaves this morning for El

ley, C. W. Houstou. S. I). Anderson
and J. B. Shea, took a run after the
deer yesterday. They had a flue pack :
of hounds aud enjoyed some rare
sport. Capt. Percy got his maiden j
shot at a big old buck, but failing to
bring blood, the gailantcaptalu struck
out to run his buckship down, but the
horse running under an overhanging I
vine nearly pulled his rider out of the
saddle and considerably disfigured
the popular captain's handsome fea-
, tures. Capt. Percy is at home in steer- ¡
ing his ship over the stormy seas, but
when it coiues to steering a Texas
brouco on a mad race after a fright-
ened buck, he says he "Isn't thar"—
, the bronco don't answer to the helm,

Col. Peyton's Speech.
The Times regrets that owing to the
lateness of the hour it could lo* pub-
lish the speech of Col. E. H. Peyton
that was delivered from the veranda
of the Hotel Velasco Sunday night..
The colonel made a splendid speech
and received round after round of ap-
plause notwithstanding the fact that
i he had ouly partially recovered from a
I severe attack of the grippe.
