Veteran light plant superin-
tendent Lester Hodges will stay
on at the city power plant as an
employee of the city but paid by
Southwestern Public Service
Company after SPS takes over
operation of the system next
month.
Target date for the SPS
take-over is March 24, City
Manager Vernie Farrington told
the City Council Monday night.
"Southwestern Public Service
wants Lester (Hodges) kept on
the city payroll and will com-
pensate the city for his salary,
retirement benefits, etc.," Far-
rington told the Council in the
course of a discussion of em-
ployment plans for city person-
nel now employed at the power
plant.
Southwestern Public Service
will hire the remaining five
employees at the plant at sala-
ries well above those paid by the
City, Hodges told the Council.
Hodges' salary as plant sup-
ervisor will also be substantially
above that which the City has
paid him.

City to work with A&E Mobile
Home Park on drainage problems
Canadian City Council mem-
bers devoted the first half hour
of Monday's session to consid-
ering an appeal from Lou Bi-
shop, manager of A&E Mobile
Home Park, for help in finding a
solution to drainage problems
afflicting that area.
The Mobile Home Park itself
is not in the city limits, but part
of the drainage problem stems
from engineering of city streets
in the area, and Council mem-
bers were sympathetic.
Mrs. Bishop told the Council
that Alex Macias, who owns the
park, is ready to curb and gutter
the streets inside the Mobile
Home park but his engineer
needs a grade to work from on
Mobeetie street, the city street
which borders the area.
"We want somebody to tell us
what we need to do," Mrs.
Bishop told the Council.
Councilman Charlie Plumlee
told the Council "it's our obli-
gation to engineer Mobeetie
street to give these folks a grade
to work with."
Mayor George Arlington
agreed, saying "the City will
get an engineer to work with
A&E in establishing the grade
on Mobeetie," and the Council
approved, unanimously, Plum-
lee's motion to "have the en-
gineering survey done immedi-
ately."
In other action the Council
agreed to sell a 1950 Ford fire

Volunteer Fire Department for
ten dollars. Fire Chief Gene
Mathews, accepting the deal,
told the Council that the De-
partment expects to use money
raised with the old truck to
equip an emergency vehicle,
and plans to use an old ambu-
lance given the VFD by the
County Commissioners to con-
vert it to an emergency vehicle.
Mathews also delivered an
invitation to the Council mem-
bers to attend the Fire Depart-
ment's annual banquet at City
Hall on the night of March 14.
Mayor Arlington signed an
order setting the city officer
election for April 4 and an-
nounced the filing deadline as
March 2.
Terms of Mayor George Ar-
rington, and Council Members
Guy Folley and Bob Lewis will
expire in April. Gaydean Bucher
was appointed election judge.
Arrington also announced the
re-appointment of Dr. Malouf
Abraham as City Health Officer.
the expense of Southwestern
Public Service, is aimed at
protecting the retirement bene-
fits earned by the long-term city
employee. SPS will compensate
the City for Hodges salary, as
well as for all other operational
and maintenance expenses of
the plant when SPS takes it over
under ten-year lease next
month, if all goes according to
plan.
The City has advertised the
power plant for lease, and the
city's electric distribution sys-
tem for sale, by public bid as
required by law.
Southwestern Public Service
Company is expected to be the
successful (and only) bidder on
terms already agreed on
through negotiation.
Only five employees remain
on the city payroll at the power
plant, in addition to the super-
intendent. Lester Hodges told
the Council Monday night. All

Canadian City Council mem-
bers moved unanimously Mon-
day night to enforce the city's
zoning ordinance relating to
mobile homes.
Council action resulted from a
complaint filed against Jackie
Bentley, who had located a
mobile home in the back yard of
his home at 302 Cheyenne street
in a residential general zone.
