THURSDAY 19 FEBRUARY 1981
Wildcats wrap up title; set for
bi-district play with Fritch
The Canadian Wildcats
wound up an undefeated con-
ference season Tuesday night at
Wheeler, wiping out the Whee-
ler Mustangs 81 to 47 in a
fast-breaking runaway in which
Wildcats were opposed with
more force than finesse.
The Mustangs led at the end
of the first quarter 17-16, but
the Wildcats broke it wide open
in the second and led 41 to 22 at
the half and stretched their lead
to 63-29 at the third quarter.
Craig Young led the scoring
with 18 points, and Bear Schafer
scored 14. Tv Henderson scored
11 for the Mustangs, and Boyd
Waldo scored 10.
Canadian girls also chalked
up a final victory over Wheeler
to hang on in the runner-up
position for the second half of
the district season, but the
Clarendon girls won their final
match with Memphis and
clinched the district champion-
ship.
Volleyball
tournament
in March
Canadian's annual Volleyball
Tournament, directed by Bill
Cross of the CHS physical
education department, is sche-
duled for March 26-27-28.
Entries from both men's and
women's teams are invited.
Individual trophies will be
awarded first, second and third
place team members; and a
team trophy will be given for
fourth place.
The tournament will be play-
ed in the Canadian high school
and Middle School gymnasi-
ums.
In the girls game at Wheeler,
Canadian girls won 37 to 30 in a
low-scoring defensive duel. The
Canadian girls, playing flawless
defense, shut out their oppon-
ents 14-0 in the first quarter,
and led 19-13 at the half. They
held a 9-point lead 28-21 after
three quarters and won it 37-30
at the finish. Sandra Schafer
with nine points and Melinda
Varnell with 8 led the scoring.
In Junior Varsity games at
Wheeler, Canadian teams com-
pleted a four-game sweep. The
Canadian JayVee girls won 66 to
40, and the Canadian JayVee
boys defeated Wheeler 44 to 29.
In other final-game district
action, Clarendon teams won a
pair from Memphis, 50 to 48 in
the boys game and 73-36 in the
girls division; and Wellington
teams took the final pair from
Shamrock, the Wellington girls
winning 48-34 and the Skyrock-
ets defeating the Irish 60 to 58.
Wildcats will
meet Fritch in
i-district
With two weeks before the
bi-district play-off with Sanford-
Fritch Eagles, champions of
District 1-AA, the Canadian
Wildcats are looking for practice
games to fill the interim.
A game has been scheduled
with the Perryton Rangers, 1-
AAA champions, in Canadian,
probably next week, and the 1-A
champion Follett Panthers will
also be opponents. Coach Larry
Dyess is looking for a couple
more.
The bi-district play-off game
with the Eagles will be played
on March 10, at a site still to be
decided.
