Perryton man is sworn in as new
Hemphill County deputy sheriff
Bllly D. Starr, 29, of Perry-
ton, has been sworn in as
Hemphill County Deputy
Sheriff, and will take over his
duties here next Monday,
Sheriff Walter Adams an-
nounced at mid-week.
Starr was sworn in Monday,
after meeting with Hemphill
County Commissioners.
He has been employed for
the past five years by the
Slumberjay oil well servicing
company at Perryton, and re-
quested time to give his com-
pany notice before leaving his
Job there, Sheriff Adams said.
Starr is married, and has
one son, Billy jr., 3 years old.
Mr. and Mrs. Starr plan to
move to Canadian Sunday.
They will occupy quarters in
the County Jail building for-
merly occupied by ex-Sheriff
and Mrs. Harry Rathjen. Sher-
iff R a t h j e n resigned two
weeks ago to accept appoint-
ment as Canadian postmaster,
and his chief deputy, Adams,
was appointed to succeed him
in the office until the next
general election.

FORT HOOD, Tex. (AHTNC)
—Cadet John E. Grist, son of
Mrs. Charlene Grist, Canadi-
an, Is receiving six weeks of
training at the Army Reserve
Officer Training Corps (ROTC)
summer camp at Fort Hood.
The training is scheduled to
be concluded July 28.
During this training Cadet
Grist is receiving practical ex-
perience and instruction in
tactical, technical and admin-
istrative subjects, with special
emphasis placed on the du-
ties of a second lieutenant.
The 21-year-old cadet is a
1958 graduate of Canadian
High School and is a student
at Texas Technological Col-
lege in Lubbock.

on Korean duty
Specialist Fourth Class Wal-
ter O. Wright, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Clint Wright of Glazier,
was selected as the 27th Ord-
nance Batallion Soldier of
the Month for July.
Sp/4 Wright arrived in Ko-
rea in May, 1961 for 13
months of duty. He is a mail
clerk. His wife, Lois, resides
in Woodward, Oklahoma.
Robert Lewis attended a
basketball camp at Plainview
for 10 days in June. His fam-
ily picked him up there on
June 30th and went on to Cal-
ifornia for a vacation trip, ar-
riving back in Canadian July
10.

with the United States Air
Force.
"I think people here will
like him," Sheriff Adams com-
mented. "He is a fine young
fellow, and is greatly inter-
ested in working with young
people . . . especially boys ...

Public warned
against itinerant
insurance sales
Door-to-door salesmen ped-
dling insurance policies . . .
generally for hospitalization,
accident and injury, and sim-
ilar coverages . . . are report-
edly operating again in this
area; and prospective pur-
chasers are warned to check
up on the companies repre-
sented before buying.
Articles in the Quanah Tri-
bune - Chief during the past
two weeks have warned resi-
dents in that area against
"bogus insurance salesmen."
The Quanah newspaper re-
ports that a team of door-to-
door salesmen "specializing
in worthless insurance poli-
cies" has been operating there.
Inquiries made during the
past few days at the local
hospital indicate that Insur-
ance sales teams may be op-
erating here as well.
Mary Louther is
elected chairman
of hospital group
At a meeting of the Texas
Panhandle Hospital Area Of-
ficials held Wednesday in
Amarillo, Mrs. Mary Louther
was elected chairman of the
group. Other officers elected
at the meeting w^re Jim Lu-
ker of Childress, chairman-
elect; W. Howard Miller,
Northwest Texas Hospital of
Amarillo, vice-chairman; H.
E. Barnett of Friona, secre-
tary-treasurer.
The meeting was held at
the Top of Texas Restaurant
at Wolflin Village. Speaker
for the day was Elton Cox of
Canyon. His subject was "Hos-
pital Credits and Collections."
Rev. and Mrs. Hardy Chil-
dress and family of Seguin
and Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Bry-
ant of Gatesville visited brief-
ly in Canadian Thursday, en
route to their homes after a
week at camp in Glorietta,
New Mexico.

three weeks.
Mrs. C. H. Lansdown and
children returned to Canadian
last Saturday after spending
the early part of the summer
at Lubbock. Mr. Lansdown re-
mained in Lubbock to com-
plete a course at Tech under
the National Science Founda-
tion which will end August 2.
Jacky Newton and Paul Cro-
sier visited Jimmie Nix in
Vici, Oklahoma Saturday eve-
ning.

Canadian trip
Gordon Rivers left from
Spearman Monday morning
by chartered bus for a nine-
day canoe trip in the wilds of
Canada. The busful of Explor-
er Scouts from several Pan-
handle towns will go to Ely,
Minnesota, and from there by
canoe into Canada for the
nine-day trip.
Gordon expects to return to
Spearman August 1. He was
the only member of the local
troop to make the trip.
