In high school and junior high
1960 honor graduates announced
Honor students of the Cana-
dian high school and junior
high graduating classes were
announced this week by Prin-
cipal Joe Cullender.
Valedictorian of the high
school senior class will be
John D. Glenn jr., who is com-
pleting his high school career
with a four-year grade aver-
age of 94.76.
Salutatorian of the class is
Betty Lee Abraham, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Malouf Abra-
ham, with a four-year average
of 94.32.
In the Junior High, valedic-
torian of the eighth grade
class is Earl Rhea 3rd, son of
J. Glenn B. Abraham
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rhea jr.,
with a two-year grade average
of 96.78.
Salutatorian of the class
will be Wade Adams, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Adams,
with a two-year average of
96.45.
All four have been outstand-
ing in school activities.
Johnny Glenn, Student Body
president and president of the
Senior Class, has recently been
named as a National Merit
Scholar. lie has won iirsr pla-
ces in district Interscholastic
League events for four consec-
utive years . . . was State
Champion last year in Number
Sense, and is competing at
Austin this week-end for an-
other state championship in
Debate. He was named Citi-

school last year, and has been
a Student Council member for
four years.
Betty Abraham is also a
four-year member of the Stu-
dent Council, and was a final-

Jim Fitzgerald
resigns from
City Council
City Councilman Jim Fitz-
gerald has resigned his post
on the Council and moved his
family to Topeka, Kansas,
where he has been on tempor-
ary duty for several weeks at
his rail union headquarters.
Fitzgerald submitted his res-
ignation to Mayor Bill Bart-
lett last week-end, according
to City Manager Bob Jamison.
Nn successor has been ap-
pointed as yet, Jamison said,
adding that Mayor . Bartlett,
out of town this week, prob-
ably would announce an ap-
pointment at the next regular
meeting of the Council.
Fitzgerald's elective term
will expire next year.

Thirty-two blocks designated
for new city street paving
Thirty-two blocks of resi-
dential streets have been des-
ignated by the Canadian City
Council for paving under the
current street paving pro-
gram, City Manager Bob Jam-
ison announced this week.
This means that seven
blocks have been added to the

Girl Scout leaders, parents,
troop committee members and
interested citizens will be held
at the Girl Scout Hut Tues-
day May 10, at 2:00 p. m.
Plans will be discussed for a
day camp to be held in June
near Canadian for Canadian
girls.
A stockholders meeting of
the Canadian-Lipscomb Trans-
lator System will be held on
Monday, May 9, at 7:30 p. m.
at the Lipscomb County Court
House.

This lias been made possi-
ble, he said, partially by the
County's participation ... to
the extent of $2.500 ... in
the paving of Cheyenne street;
and partly by funds which the
City is saving bv city hand-
ling of the paving "paper."
Property owners can pay the
paving assessments in four in-
stallments ,.. one-fourth down
and the balance in three equal
annual installments . . . and
the City itself will handle this
financing, freeing enough
funds to cover the city's por-
tion of paving the extra
blocks.

Democrat primary
election Saturday
Saturday is election day,
and with three contested local
races on the Democratic Pri-
mary ballot, a heavy turn-out
of voters is expected in this
county.
Eighty-six absentee ballots
had been cast by the deadline
Tuesday . . . four more than
were tallied in this depart-
ment in the 1958 primary. A
total of 973 votes were cast in
this county in that election.
Ten polling places will be
opened Saturday morning.
Rotary will hear of
progress in science
Electronic brains, guided
missiles, and man-made sat-
ellites will be demonstrated in
a talk before the Canadian
Rotary Club Monday noon.
Glenn Scott, public informa-
tion supervisor for the South-
western Bell Telephone Com-
pany, will speak on electronic
systems which will provide a
new type telephone service
and are the nerves of today's
guided missiles.
Members of the audience
will see a model of the pres-
ent Nike Hercules, the guided
supersonic anti-aircraft mis-
sile and hear the storv of
Nike Zeus, an anti ■ missile
missile now under develop-
ment in the Bell Telephone
Laboratories.
A model of the Titan, larg-
est of this country's inter-
continental ballistic missiles,
will be shown and its com-
munications system for hom-
ing in on an enemy target ex-
plained.
The program is entitled,
"Telephone Science In Nation-
al Defense," and is being
