tt. From amazement, anger and re-
sentment began to gather on the lower-
ing countenances of the thoroughly
aroused passengers. They had never
heard any one whistle before on C.w
elevated trains and they seemed deter-
mined to make a stand. The corpulent
broker said:
"Hem! ahem! I say there."
It had no effect whatever. The mus-
ical youth had his soul in his work.
The prosperous merchant le; ned for-
ward.
"Would you mind cutting that short,
my young man ?"
No response whatsoever, but a little
louder effort from the whistler. Five
or six irate passengers then yelled la
chorus:
•'Stop that noise, young man!''
He never even looked around, but
oontinued something louder than be-
fore. Riot appeared imminent. The
guard was called in, but his services
were not needed, for ut that moment a
station was reajhed and out rushed the
youth, whistling in a pianissimo key.
"He is as deaf as a post, but a good
musician," said the guard aloud.
Then quietness came like a chunk of
wisdom, and no passenger looked the
ether in the face. —Mail and Expresa'
