Origin of "In The Soup".
In regard to the above phrase which
of late has been much iu>ed both by
the press, and as a frye-word, the fol-
lowing may perhaps account for it:
origin. It is said that an English lady
of title v- as troubled at times with a
very unpleasant aud annoying perspir-
ing at the nose when engaged in ani-
mated conversation. One day whilst
giving a dinner party, and fearing that
she might during the conversation
that would naturally ensue, omit to
remove the offending drop with her
handkerchief, ordered Uer footman to
remind her of its presence by saying
'Simon is at the door'. According
to instructions, he kept close watch,
and noticing t Iiat my lady had evident-
ly forgoiton t he so called Simon's pres-
ence, remarked Madam, Simon is at
the door". Seeing that 110 attention
was paid him, he repeated the warning.
Again 110 heed was given him, and as
the glistening drop fell from my lady's
nose, he remarked with some degree of
emphasis "Madam, Simon is in the
soup'1. Whether this is the eorrcct
origin or not the writer cannot say.
but the phrase is certainly somewhat
similar.
