The movement for amendment* to
the present Land Laws gathers nev
(Strength day by day. Let the good
work go forward conquering and te

From the manner in which the re

Texaa fever, eo-called, was cepmn*
nicated by the cattle belonging te

the jail injunction suit, a ter a full
hearing of the case on iu meriis,
granting a perpetual icjunciion a
gainst the defendanta iu tho caeo i*
eminently a jnst and proper cae.
The movement for anew jail here at
the present time was a rash ant* au
unwarranted proceeding, unwise and
unnecessary under existing c;rcum
stances. From only an economical
•tand-poimt, the Criscsmt has ever
opposed the matter and contended
that such an expenditure of funds
was not warranted by the* financial
condition of the county nor called
for by its needs. While we feel a
personal gratification over the fact
that a hearing of the case on its
merits has fully vindicated every
thing that we have ever said con-
cerning the affair. The men who
fcave had the courage to undertake
this matter and fight it through to
% successful issue are deserving of
much praise and credit for what has
been accomplished for the people
of Hemphill county. The credit and
financial standing of the county a^e
safe from this unnecesaaary burden
fir the present at least.
As we have constant inquiries
from those who are seeking tepur
chase a homestead out of our pub-
lie lands we reply once for ail, that
í roa can buy not less than 160 acre9,
or 320, 480, or 640, but no more,
unless you select purely grazing
land without permanent water and
not adapted to agriculture, of this
pasture land yon can buy not to ex-
ceed four sections. The dry land
will cost you $2 an a rc. But you
must come in person to tiie county
seat of the county where the land
lies or iv whith it is attached, if
in an unor^ainzed couutv. and call
on the couaty clerk who will show
you a public record of the classifi
cation of nil unsold state lands
lion looking the ground oyer you
find the laud to suit you, you will
get a blauk form for an application
te purchase and other information
of the law and the land as may be
known to him. You will ikeu execute
a swora affidavit in your application
for purchase, that you want the land
for a homestead for yourself and
that no other persea or corporation
is interested in the purchase, and
that you have in good faith actually
Hettled thereon and will improve the
**me. You will forward your appli-
cation to purchase directly to Hon.

missioner, A ustión, Texas, inclosing
ihesuin of thirty-two dollars to the
order of P. R Lubbock, state Treas-
urer, this being one fortieth of the
principal on a section of dry agri*
cultural land. If you select land
Miith permanent water on it, it will
cost you Uuee dollars per acre, or
one dollar per acre more than the
unwatered land. If you buy land
.hat is valued chiefly for timber, you
«oust pay an acre cash down On
alt other lauds you will pay one for-
tieth of the principal in advance*
No lurther payment on the principal
wiii be required until the end of the
:oriy years if the purohaser desires
the time, bu* the interest must be

Uie required payments of interest

^roof that you have resided on the
land for the time specified. At any
time after you have settled upon the
land and bought it, yon can sell it
to another aetual settler, who will
be reqnired to assume your obliga-
tion to the state. All the unsold
state lands are now on the market
for sale to aetnal settlers only for
the benefit of the common school,
the state university, lunatic asylum
blind asylum, the deaf and dumb
asylum, and the orphan asylum
funds. Public lands in this county
are being eulled of their best parts j
every day. Excellent looations and
the best of state lands can still be
had here and a good place secured
by coming at once. The sooner you
come, the better yon will be served.
