Rid the city of Lewieesneee.
By Associated Press. ,
New York, April 26.— District
Attorney Jerome has /sent sev-
eral staff detectives into Chat1-
ham square where they raided
an alleged policy shop. (They
made two prisoners and seized
paraphernalia said to have been
used in the business., Chatham
square is in the'police precinct
presided over by Capt. Vreden-
burgh, who recently wSü' quoted
in the newspapers as having
said he would pay $500 reward
to any one who could discover a
disorderly h^úse or a policy shop
in his .precinct. The raid was
somewhat spectacular, hundreds
of people seeing the detectives
enter the place by smashing the
doors. Six men were in the
roqm and the officers had td use
force in making arrests. One of
the officers- was po dazed by a
blow that a man he was holding*
got away, as did three others by
méaris of the fire escape. The
raid is looked on as important
in that the police claim it was
the headquarters or "Clearing
house" for the downtown shops.
