will. Now, gentlemen, in
that same physical force, which, in the
phrase of the day, is sometimes called the
power of the masses," lies a great problem
for all thoughtful men to resolve, Kiiowl-
e has brought ns face to face with it,
knowledge must either instruct force,or
ill destroy the iuvoker. May, then, all
those who possess th£ knowledge, who are
with the lamp, nse it only for bene-

whose tread could arouse the earthquake

Mr. Webster's Idea of Extempo-
raneous Speeches.—It was one of Mr.
Webster's characteristics that he abhorred
all affectation. That affectation often seen
in young men. of speaking in public upon
the impulse of the moment, without previ-
ous thought and preparation, of all others
be most despised. He never spoke withou?
previous thought, and laborious preparation.
I have often thought that if .other men
coul^ have been as diligent*and assidious
as Mr, Webster, they might have equalled
bim in achievement. When he addressed
the Court, the Bar, the Senate or the
people, he ever thought he had a right to
speak without previous preparation. He
came before the: body to which he was to
speak, will 'his thoughts arrayed in their
best dress He thought this was due to
men who would stand and hear him .- and
the result was that every thing he said was
always woHhy of being read ; and no pub-
lic ma uiu our couuiry has ever been so
mnch read.—Hiram Ketchum's speech
at New York. ■
Life and Existence.—The mere lapse
of years is not lité. To eat and drink and
sleep—to be exposed to darkness and the
lighi—to pace round in the mill.of habit
and turn thought into an implement of trade
—this is not life. In all this, but a poor
fraction of the consciousness of humanity
is awakened, and the sanctities still slumber
which make it worth while tobe. Knowl
edge , truth, love, beauty, goodness, faith,
alone can-give vitality to the mechanism
of existeuce. The laugh of mirth that vi
bretes through the heart, the tears that
freshen the dry wastes witliiu, the music
that .rings childhcod'back, the prayer that
calls the future near, the doubt'which
makes us mediate,.the death whieh startles
us with mystery, the hardship which forces
ns to struggle, the anxiety that ends in trust,
are the true nourishment of our natural
being.—[James Martineau.

Humanity of the Medical Profission.
—Amongst the leading characteristics of
the medical character, humanity is one of
the most prominent. At, the call Of the
lowest aud meanest, at all hours and in all
seasons, the medical practitioner never fails
to attend tb the cry off the suffering and the
diseased ; and this, too iu many instances,
without the slightest expectation of fee or
reward. The service thus rendered "to
humanity are beyond all calculation. The
charitable exertions of every oilier profes-
sion and calliug, "pale" before those of
the humane practitioner of medicine—£,0 -

words with greater ease and accuracy.

of geography, in almost half the time it re-

them familiar with the location of the im-

they more readily comprehend, the raeauiug

Private Charcter of a Locomotiva—
People who may see a locomotive tearing
up and down the land, at a gait of forty
miles to the hour—making the very earh
groan beneath its giant tread, and the heav-
ens themselves reverberate with its fearful
clatter-scaring nature by its unearthly din,
and heightening all creation from its pro
priety, almost—people who only see it in
its terrible activity, have no idea what emi-
nently social virtues it is eudowed with.
This is their public character. Their pri-
vate one is another affair. Now and then
one of these huge monsters, in whose iron
bowels slumber more than a thousand giant
powers, comes up and stands under our
window, as gently as the most exemplary
cooking stove, its huge steam-pipes sing-
ing a strain as soft and as*dulcet as the
most aimable -tea-kettle, and its jungs of
steel breathing as sweetly ásan infant in
its slumbers. But|the demon of power is
there. Let any one but pinch its ears, and
no venerable spinster cat will spit more
fiercely. Let him gripe these iron hands,
and the pipes which were tuned to so soft
strain, send forth a yell as if heaven and
earth were coming together, and those,
longs which first breathed so quietly, cough
like a volcano—and off it goes, darkening
the heaven with its dense volnme of smoke
Average Mortality of Mankind-The
population of the whole earth has been
variously estimated at between eight hundj-
red and a thousand millions of souli.
If we üx upon an intermediate number,
say 892,080,Q00, and assign thirty years
for the continuance Of each^ generation, we
shall find that the ■•children of men" come
into the world and go out of it at the fol
lowing average:

In a few weeks the master inquired how
much of his wages he had saved. "Faith,

and it all went."
A late French translator of Shakspeare
coming to the passage—'Oh, what a fall
was there, my countrymen,' has it—'Oh
what an autumn was there, my country-
