The contract of the bridge was
signed and scaled on Saturday last
and the contractor has commenced
taking down the bridge at Hemp-
stead ready to remove to this place.
Ruxaway.—A colored boy was
thrown from a horse, Monday, and
was considerably tlamacrcd, the
shoulder beinp badly broken. He
was taking ahorse belonging to Mr
Little to water when tho animal
took fright. He wns attended by
Drs. Stone'and F.-y and is doing
well.
The Santa Fe railroad is having
a wire fence put up enclosing the
track from Galveston to Foyt
Worth. Work haa already com-
menced, and in a few week stock
will be completely barred 'from get-
ting on ths traek. The datnagos
paid last year by the company for
killing stook amounted to $78, 000;
hence the necessity for enclosing
tho line.

was witnessed by quite a number
and was decided in favor of Vol
Gibson* The first race half-a-mile
was ridden by Mr. Harper on his
horse against Y. Gibson and was

entertained at the National Hotel.

It was near on to twelve when
all, bado our kind hostess adieu,
and dispersed.
Tho programme was a fine one
and rcflcctcd groat crcdit on Miss
Board's taste and judgment.
'I'ho Rev. llotchkiss Mrs. Jane
Peasant's, Mrs. Nation, Miss
Boyd, Miss Brush, Miss Jamison,
Miss G. Blakely being tho euter-
taincrs on this occassion,
Tho music was of a sacred char-
acter principally, Mr. llotchkiss
presiding at the piano and leading
tho choir of charming vocalist.
We were pleased to noto several
new acquisitions Miss Boyd, Mrs
Neal, Mr. Cheney and last but b¿
no means least Mr. Alic Pliipps.
The hymns were grand,and beau-
tiful; Mrs. Nation, Miss Boyd, and
Miss Brush contributed several
pretty songs. Miss Brush,as all will
bear witness, is a gifted girl. Her
voice one of her valuable gifts.
Miss Boyd's singing, like lier
recitation,was perfect; well trained-
her articulation, modulation of
voice and gestures were smooth and
even her elocution was excellent
all manifesting a finished course of
study.
Miss Boyd, will grace our next
pogramme, we are pleased to state
the fact. Our president to tho re-
great of many, resigned and an el-
ection of offices will take place at
next regular meeting. It will be
remembered that Mrs. Carrie Nation
was for a lengthy period the worthy
president of the Mite Society, and
when organizing this club she was
unanimously elected^ by ,acclaina
tion, by those present at the time
of organization,and has served with
untiring zeal, up to the present time
W ho can fill her place?
Tho friends of the Penny Club
are urgently solicited to attend the
meeting Monday, Sept. 1st, as in
election of officer will be necessary
and this is important business all
should improve the opportunity
and cast their vote.
Mrs. Cad Nation haa cordially
invited the club to hold this meet-
