mesquit In the Nueces Valley, it is
represented, within a circuit ot five
miles from Kennedy's ferry, there
are now about five thousand head
ofcaUie that have died from starva-
tion. The loas is computed at
twenty-five per cent of the entire
stock ranging in the vicinity.
It will require at least twelve
months with good crops for the

With all these reverse , a moro de-
sirable country does not exist on
tbe continent. With irrigation and

Texas could aoture a prosperity,

passed in the Mississippi valley.

The Way it Works
A. Scoxr has been elected
of the Texas and Pacific

dicted, tbo uses intended for the
amended charter authorizing a sale of
the frauchises by tbe incorporators.
After paying ont three hundred thou-
sand dul'urs to a corrupt Legislature
for fleecing the people oí Texas, Ron

million or a]cniliioa and a half dollars,
on the sale oí the rubsidy charter.

Editor Gszktte:—I liave been vr i su-
ing to say something in reference to
the police outrages in Tyler and Na-
oogdeche , but have l>«o delayed.
Tbe people justly ery out against
such offenccs against the lawg of God
and tnan, but unfortunately do nothing
bnt whine. They ask if there is no
relief, and when we are to be delivered
from such infliction ? I say the reme-
dy is with tbvi people themselves, and
if they do nothing but protest and de-
nounce, the remedy will not come.
Deprecation and sabmisaion only in-
vite further aggression. L«t tbe
people arouse and Ret promptly aad
bravely in self-defence, and the evil
will soon be dissipated. They should
know and act upon tbe fact that the
police are only authorised to prevent
crime—not to commit it—and exacute
the laws. They have no light to vio-
late a statute, or the natural rights of
citizens. If, indeed, tbe Legislature
bad attempted to invest the police
with authority to morder and destroy
the liberty of the people, such enact-
ment would bo a anility, and wonld
afford the perpetrators no justification
or defence. Further, when an officer
passes beyond tbe boundary of the law,
he at onca, and to that extent, cursos
to be an officer, and is to be resMta
ae any other traM|retsor. lí a officer
violates the law agaipfft life and liberty
he may be riricken down as any pri-
vate individual, committing a like d«ed.
Self-defence ia the remedy. When
the law has been appealed to, as In
