For it is the fairest of tests to judge of

place such men in positions of trust; if

One of the party thus robbed sued

the name th«n become synony
the thing itself, and without, explanation
or qualification, represents to our mind
all that pertains to the subject matter.
A name, thus, from an abstract term,
becomes a living principle, o to speak,
an energizing wand, a potent /;hari ,—
And though the queBtio i often put:
- what is in a name f" ee-otdled leatling
men, #ell understand the majrftetic influ
ence of a popular term or phrase, and,
never fail to touch tl}| sensitive nerve of
the public mind, whenever they have
particular measure to promote or oer-
usin ends to accomplish. History is foil of
examples, where kings and men in author-
ity have induced their subjects to.engage
in rebellion and revolution, by the capti
voting allurements of a name, and the
mat se have found, when too late, that
they had been deluded and hoodwinked
deceived and cheated, and iasUs^.l of the
public good, had been serving the cap-
rice and tyranny of ambition. The
game, though often played and so well
understood by the looser*, is «till contin-
ued to be played, and with great-effect
by the always successful party. The
winning party is invariably ths ambitious
few who grasp after power; the loos ere
are the unsophisticated many. Desna
gogues and corrupt unprincipled trick-
ster , when found in a minority are
never at a loss for a new hobby
to stride, and their prolific, im-
aginations readily christen it with
a popular appellation. The great hue
and cry just now, among political weath
er-cocks, i " Conservatism ;" and under
that as a cloak, the nondescript "moder
ate man " is ready to perpetrate fraud,
treachery and every unprincipled politi-
cal evil, still claiming that he is apatriot
that he desires the maintenance of cortect
principles, and frowns upon all innova-
tions and change. But, we judge partisans
by the measures they advocate. If Non
dsacript Conservatism embraces the mis-
erable, corrupt and loathesorae schemes
of Loyal League Radicals, the one is
simply the counterpart of the other.—

Sxcrxtaky of Sute, Mr. Nkwcokb,
we are informed, has just reached Aus-
tin, after an extended tour over the
State inspecting the machinery of the
Loyal League organization. We are told
that he found the "colored troop " in a
very demoralised condition, and that noth-
ing short of á little riot or two, can defeat
the Democratic candidates now in the
field to fill the feveral vacancies in the
Legislature. If these reports are true,
we should Ijks to know, merely as a
matter of curiosity, if Mr. Newoomb's
trsveling expenses were footed up by the
State Treasurer! That's the current re
port.
