THE BELTON INDEPENDENT.
THE BELTON I1EPDEKDENT.
B3F We think wo cannot do bet-
tor, to set Mr. Kumsey in his proper
position before the Planters of our
section of country, than to make
extracts from his letter to us. The
letter was not intended for publica-1
tron. but we will tuke the liberty oí
laying a portion of it before our
readers:
" I have had moro to do than I
thought possible, when I came north,
to be ready for future business. 1
iiave been flooded with circulars and
posters, of new inventions and im-
provements, over since my arrival.
Many oí them have looked practi-
cable, so much so, that 1 have been
to Southern Ohio and Indiana on
the one side, and Boston, Mass., on
the other; stopping at more than
thirty different towns, to look at
something, or get a chance at the
work of these articles. You know,
I am determined to have a good im-
plement for the planter, if I get any.
I believe I have accomplished that
object. If I have failed in anything,
I Bhall endeavor, in all cases, to
make proper amends for the failure.
Now, then, it remains to be seen
whether I will be patronized and
sustained, or fall by the indifference
of the Planters and Agriculturists
of Texas.
I have forwarded the best patenis
of Cast Steel and Sub Soil plows,
Grain Drills, Corn Planters, Har-
rows, Cultivators, Horse Iloes, Cot-
ton Scrapers, Cotton Sweeps, Grist
•Mills, Corn Mills, Smut Mills, Bolt-
ing Cloihs, Iloes, Forks, Shovels,
■Crowbars, Spades, Churns, Cheese
presses, Hedge Shears,4 Ox chains
¡and yokes, Bows, Bull rings, Rakes,
Basket?, Measures, Buckets, Wash
Tubs, and a thousand and one other
things, all of the best quality.
In addition to all these, I have
purchased a fine supply of fresh
garden seed, of this year's growth,
hoping to be patronized by the incr-
•chants of the country, in these arti-
cles, if I took pains to be sure and
put chase fresh seed. I have shipped
a few of those beautiful Oats, (the
Poland), but they come far short oí
the standard this year, on account
of the unfortunate season. It is a
fact that the Oat ciop is one univer-
sal failure, South, North, East and
West; still 1 have good seed, that
will grow. It is not like the sam-
ple I left with you, but it will pro-
duce si.ch with a good season.
1 have Baily, Peas, Sugar Cane,
Broom Corn, Beans, Corn, Hunga-
rian Grass seed, Millet, &c., &c. I
have run the risk to buy a choice lot.
of selected grafted Fruit Trees,
warranted true to the name, which
I will deliver in Houston at $50 per
100. Apples of the very best kinds
and Grapevines, 50c. each; Cherry
trees, best, $1 each; Peaciies, Apri-
cots, and Nectarines, 50c. each;
Pears, 50c. to $1; Currants, Goose-
berries, &c., to fill up the assort-
ment; also a choice lot of Tlovn/s
Seedling Strawberry, these are the
best being raised, cost §3 per 100.
These things will all be on hand
about the 1st of December, and I
hope to hear of the wants of many
in Bell county and vicinity, before
they come to hand, that I may know
how many to send there."
"I have these trees all warranted
to be in good order when they come
through, so tlicro will not be the
least risk of purchasing trees that
•will not grow. If proper caro is
taken in putting them out, any man
will soon find himself surrounded
comforts; yes, luxuries of lite, and
all for a trifle and a little care.
I forgot to say that the Oats arc
expensive, (but yet they aro cheap)
will cost, in Houston, $3 per bushel
of 32 lbs."
" I have been busy all the sum-
mer—leit not a stone unturned
which I thought would do Texas any
good."

a point of law hclore him, which his

to illustrate his point, commenced,
" Now, may it. please your honor,
