t&' Wo visited the new School
House in the courso of erection, on
Pepper's Creek, in the neighborhood
of Messrs. E. Embree, Carpenter,
Hill, &c., on Thursday evening last,
and found the stone work almost
completed. That portion of it is the
part contributed by Mr. Embree; the
balance is to be dono by Messrs. D.
R. Hill, W. Pewitt and / Rev. J no.
Carpenter; Mr. R. M. liox furnishing
the material for building. This is
the proper spirit. Here, in the coun-
try, iu a limited neighborhood, have
they gone to work in earnest, and,
at a cost of some $2(>0 or $300 each,
will have a School house that will
be an ornament to any community.
This house is eligibly situated on
the bank of Pepper's Creek, with a
fine, never-failing spring of good
water; and water in the creek suf-
cient for any purpose. The build-
ing is 40 feet long by 20 wide, in-
side, and will comfortably accommo-
date 100 pupils. The Stone work
has bet ii put up well, by our friend,
B. Nichols.
23y The Ciiuard (English) Steam-
ers have been running between Liv-
erpool and New York for the last 18
years. During that time, with, the
exception of the Crimean War,
when they were chartered by the
British Government, they have reg-
ularly left each side once a week;
liave carried on every trip a large
fiumbcr of passengers—averaging
200 souls on board each trip—and,
during all this time, not a life has
teen lost, and not a casualty has
liappened, except in the,instance of
the Columbia, which was stranded
on a reef off Halifax—passengers,
crew and all, rescued. *

DjP" We learn from the San Anto-
nioLedger, that the Irish paper con-
tain accounts of disasters caused
by a furious rain storm, which swept
over the south and west, inundating
whole tracts of country. Lives have
been lost, bridges and houses thrown
down, and thousands' worth of prop-
erty destroyed. In the county of
Cork, whole potato fields have been
submerged, and valleys turned in an
bour into lakes.

jar During the whole of last
week, the Sixth National Agricul-
tural Exhibition was held near Rich-
mond, Va. From the Programme,
politely furnished us by the Secreta-
ry cf the Ü. S. Agricultural Society,
w.e learn that Gov. Wise, of Va.,
was a committee for receiving visi-
tors, and that Hon. Caleb Cushing,
of Massachusetts, and Hon. W. C.
llives, were to have addressed the
audience at the banquet.
A sufficient quantity of iron
has been purchased to finish the
Mississippi Central Railroad. It
now requires but about $400,000 to
grade the road to its terminus.
