The most grievous intelligence re-

no doubt caused and aggravated by
his devotion to his duties.

at the City of Mexico. 1 On the eve-
ning of Sunday, the 6th of Jan., the
city was thrown into great excite-
ment by the appearance of two dis-
tinct pi-o^raminua proólittmtng l'csís-
tancc to the new order of things,
and calling the people to arms, both
warring against Comonfort, and one
of them' being put out by the Santa
Anna party.
The people responded to each ac-
cording to their attachments and prej-
udices or perhaps the circumstances
of the moment. These ranged them-
selves on the side of the ultra Puros;
those under the 'ancient banner of
Santa Anna; while the.remainder
stood faithful to Commonfort, or took
no side at all. The Santanaists were
fortunate enough in the beginning
to get possession of tho citadel, the
Convent of &an Domingo, and that
of San Augustine; the Radicals
adopted a guerrilla sort of warfare, j
with a free range of the streets,
which they barricaded as occasion
might require; while the Govern-
ment party held the balance of the
city. Business of course was sus-
pended, most of the shops closed,
and martial law at once proclaimed.
