AUCTIONEERING OF MASSA-
CHUSETTS GI11LS.
"A pacific coast editor protests
against the Mercer project of shipping
Yankee girls to that region, and de-
gires the press east of the Rocky
mountains to speak out and put a stop
to this business. He says "Let no
more unprotected females be exposed
to the perils of these shores."
People have wondered at the sense
Girdling the Earth.—Gen. E. 8.
Sanfovd, President of the American
Telegraph Company, sailed on Wed-
nesday for Europe* to make arrange-
ments for making telegraphic connec-
tion with the Atlantic telegraph when
it stall reach our shores ana also to
push forward the work of laying a
submarine telegraph from Florida to
Cuba. It is proposed to continue
the line from Cuba to the coast of
§outh America, and have the whole
wwj -—***w -v - work completed this fall. The tele-

Janthropy for some time. It is much London to the Amoor River, and from

.like the olden style of dealing in the
handsome girls of Caucassia, when
hundreds of their "school marina"
were huddled together and shipped
■off to parts unknown for the pleasure
of "Harem" Turks. We suppose the
mode of disposing of these Yankee
girls on their arrival to the Pacific
coast is something like this.
The ship has arrived in port. No-
tice has been sent to the long haired
miners and rough bachelors of that
auriferous section. The girls have
been bathed by squads, platoons and
brigades in the moutli ot some "wa-
terlall" from the mountains; their
best raiment has been put on. Stand-
ing on the poop deck, the charge
d'afiairs, with hair pushed back from
his receding forehead, with a sharp
nasal twang, thus holds forth :
"Neow yeou wild beast of this ere
pacific sands, I've brought you a hole
passel of genuine ladies, right nice
~ud fiesh from Bosting and along the
shore. I have a picked lot of gals,
fresh as a daisy and lively as a but-
terfly ! I wont sell the entire lot to
oue man for that would be too much
of a good thing, but I'll see each of
you a little charmer, warranted not to
cut in the eye, big enough for the
tallest miner, and small enough for
tiie l'east there is among you ! Walk
up, fellers. Stand up to the taffrail,
gals.
No crowding on the hausers.—
Get eout yer dust and select yer
gal!
The first I'll offer, fellers, is a freck-
led-fuced school marm, named Betsey
J ane. T'other name aint no matter.
You can ginher yeourn ! she is nine-
teen years old by the Bible, has good
teetli, twenty-seven inches around the
wa:st, and is warranted kind in har-
ness. How much, for Betsev ? Sold
to Jack Longbread for five hundred
dollars, Goody-by, Bet!
The next gal, ladies and gentle-
men. I mean fellers, is a sly puss,
named Philla Molura, She is a
choice gal, raised in Bosting—poor
but honest parents—early inured to,
tiie Gospel and Abolitionism, and
warranted perfect as far as heard
from. How much for her fellers? She
can darn a stocking or make a purap-
'kin pie, in tfee twinkling of an eye,
and she can heave a sigh, you bet!
she is going on twenty years—has a
cheek like aspitzbergen.the sweetest
lips and most dainty" breath you ever
tasted—all for—six hundred, make it
nine, and down she goes to Captain
Bull of the Woods for nine hundred.
The next animile—oh, sweetheart!
fellers, is a blue-eyed Yankee gal,
named Jeruslia Jane—never mind
her other name. She is a Austin gal.
Knows all her letters—has a constitu
tion like a tea-kittle, which is good
after its nose is knocked off for all it
will fetch, and is an ornament to her
sex or any other man ! she is twéntv-
live years old—ain't so by ——Iy
handsome, but is heavy on the hug,
And is warranted to last a life time,
if she don't die fust. How much for
Jier? Come, wake up, you fellers!
Massachusetts'wants to enlighten youl
Here is the best chance, for happiness
only a few more left! sold to dare-
devil Tom for fifty ounces of dust!
Now fellers, stand up close. Here
is a stunner, Tabithia Marier, as was
her mother before her; also her
grandmother. She is nineteen years
old, poor, but honest parents, eats but
.little—a pine gum lunch will last her
a week. Sold for no fault, but Mas-
sachusetts has no further use, and
takes this means to pay her war tax
Come up and feel of this lot. She
never scolds except in anger, and like
George Washington, never chopped a
tree with her little hatchet. She is
warranted genuine, and if not sold wil
be thrown ashore for yer fellers
¿play with—and over she goes, for it is
jill chance, you know.

missing links in the circuit of the
earth will in a few months doubtless
be supplied, and then Puck's mission
