End of the Halifax Telegraph Monop

the officers of the Halifax Telegraph
line have determined to grant uo special
privileges to any parties.
This breaks up the monopoly of the

The Southern Democrat has readied
the end of its first volume, and in refer-
ence to its past and future course indul-
ge* in a column of most sensible remarks.
Tho Democrat is an excellent paper,
and we arc glad to sec it enjoying so
much prosperity.
The Waco Southerner learns from
Major Neighbors, that Fort Delknnp is
to be abandoned as a post for Govern-
ment troops, and the upper Reserve is
henceforth to be headquarters. One
company has been ordered to the lower
Reserve. Preparations are going on for
an active campaign against the Coman-
ches this Spring.
From a statement of the financial af-
fairs of Houston city, published in the
Telegraph, we learn that the balance
against the city on Jan 1st 1859, was
$50,197 23; to affect this she has $50,-
' 000 stock in the Houston Tap, & Bra-
zoria II. 11. on the completion of twen
ty-fivc miles of which, she will be enti-
tled to $49,000 State loan. All this
notwithstanding the fact that the oxpen
scs lust year were over 60,000.

Handera City is a small village of no very
great Importance. Tbe population is estimated
at about two hundred souls. There are two
stores and ono hotel in tbe plsce. The country,
though, is very fertile and rich snd the "oldest
innnbitMnt iiiformrd mo that the winni are
always very good, and that they have no reason
to complain, which, by the way, is a great re
commendation.
Castroville has improved to a grest extent
during the last two or three years. The liilittb-
itaats «re an industrious and sober people, ami
will.-as a matter of oourse, prosper.
Few nnd far botween are tho passing event in
San Antonio that po**i.i anything beyond n local
int'TC.-t. To those who are only visitors here,
the stream «if I ft) flows smoothly along, for we
*ee not tho deeper and more ruffled currents of
human passimm mid suffering. Kvery day, • f
courso. has its changes. If it rains, out couie
umbrellas, and only the man of business i* i-cen
on Iho narrow and slippery streets. If it shines,
out jump the Indies, the boiiux, nnd the small fry
generally— who go sailing down the streets —
the former with their broad sweeping skirt* and
bewitching smiles, the beaux with nloved hands,
rattans, gracefully curved moustaches, and coats
of the must approved stylo, while the latter till
up the blank placea in the t>estpo«sible manner.
The smiling face of luxuriant ente, the care,
worn faou of poverty, the r ob clothed in their
broadcloth, the poor iu their ragu, the clerk,
merchant, loafer, etc.. nil go to mnke up the
crowd that daily fill tho streets, which seem,
apparently. I be same from time to time, just as
t'te waters ot the river thnt glides so gently
through the town.
Thi* is Sunday morning. Ausluess of course
is at a stand, with the exception of a f w e'ear
and wh'sky shops and refreshment houses.which
aro always open. The bells are now ringing
for church, and the streets are full of pedestri-
ans, many of whom are now wending their way
to tho various houses of worship, while many,
very many, aro loungjig around lor pleasure.—
Crowds of Indies, in all beauty and lovel'nesa.
iretty I ttle Ml.se*, with their neat dre=sesand
flats, sail down the side-walk, with smiles and
|>leas mt greetings. T«king it all in.all San An-
tonio is a "great institution."
As to the improvement* of th'i town I hardly
know what tossy. In company w'th a friend. I
have strolled nil over the plnco. and have view-
ed w'th emotions of pleasure and pride, the
rapidity with which it has grown, since first I
knew it. The fine stone house of Mr. J. C.
French, the magnificent hotel *f Mr. \V. A.
Menger, the excellent «teñe buildings of Messrs.
Howard dt Ogden. and Vsuce it Urn., and many
others, all go to prove the citizen* have deter-
mined to make the pine? second to none'lli the
Sonth-West. To my belief, there is not a c'ty ill
our State that ha* prospered more in the last
six years than San Antonio.
Among the institutions of learning, sit this
ilace, I take pleasuro ill making mention ot
innck's Mercantile Col'ege. Mr. James E.
liatick, the gentlemanly principal, informs me.
that t-ince the eatublishment of h's school in this
ilace, young men from every portion of the
l3tate. have taken his eour«e of lessons, and aro
now keeping books at large salaries. This is
theonly institution *fthe kind, I believe, in the
State, and I would certainly advise all who de-
sire to fit themselves for the book-keeping
butlm**, to attend his school. The institution
is certainly valuable, and the young men of our
8tate ought to avail themselves of this opportu-
nity to become perfect in the accomplishment.
The institution lias certainly a strong clnlm to
the patronage of our young men. Mr. K.stauds
among the first in the profession.
There is great talk and excitement hero in
relation to Arizona. I understand that a com-
pany of emigrants intend starting from this place
about the first of March. At all events, a great
number of people are expected hero in the
Spring, on their way to thnt land ol prom'se.
I am stopping at the Plaza Honae, which.
byHlio way. lia* improved a great deal under
the management of its new proprietor . The
diu'ug room is entirely under the control of
Mr. Minot. who I* a benu ideal ot a landlord.
I advise ail our friends to visit the Plata.--
There is an abundance of room, plenty of ser-
vants. and. iu fact, everything to satisfy the
wants of the most fastidious.
