We find the following items in the
Mobile News of the 2nd in t.
France—The Prussian ambassador
is on an oíücial visit to the Emperor of'
Barritz, and the political world is in a
ferment to know how the Prussian Cab-
inet will justify or maintain its present
system of encroachments without the
concurrence of the older European pow-
ers. The Ambassador had a long inter-
view, in Paris, with Mr. Rothschild,
which seemed to indicate some warlike
purposes.
Austria.—A new move is attracting
attention. It is said that influential
deputies, Hungarians, Bohemians, Poles,
Croats, Servians, have demanded that
the Empire should be withdrawn from
the Germanic Confederation as being an
indispensible preliminary to the solution
of the constitutional question of Aus-
tria.
This withdrawal would be an earnest
that the Empire will cease to be exclu-
sively a German power and then become
the real bond Of union between the na-
tionalities of Slavonic races.
Gi-eat jealousy is manifested against
the invading policy of Prussia.
The Austrian Government has deter-
mined to calm thv* agitation relative to
its finances by publishing official state-
ments, with a budget reduced twenty-
seven miliiofca, showing its ability to
meet all obligations, and even create a
sinking fund.
Italy.—Private correspondence from
Florence states that the dismissal of
the Austrian ambassador at Rome, fol-
lowing the recognition of Italy by Spain,
gives hopes that the policy of resistance
is at an end.
Free Masons.—The Opinion Nation-
ale respectfully defends the Free Masons
from the charge of plotting against the
Catholic Church.
Gneat Britain.—The English papers
generally have articles on the correspon-
dence between Mr. Adams and Earl Rus-
sell, just published, and regard it as
most important. The Times says it it
the most important discussion in refer-
ence to the rights and duties of neutrals
that has been carried on for many years
between tlio representatives of two
great maratime powers.
The Times can hardly doubt that
Earl Russell,s proposal for a commission
will ultimately be accepted as the most
satisfactory method of adjusting the
outstanding claims between the two
nations. No foreign sovereign or state
could have entered into all the details of
each specific claim and counter claim,
for It must not he forgotten that we too,
have long claims against the United
States for damages incurred by British
subjects düriog the war. Still less could
we have consented as, Earl Russell pointá
out, to submit the bonafideness of our
Government or the legal oompeteuciy of
our law officers to the judgment of aoy
foreign government. ?ÉWm
The best, if not the only, solution of
the difficulty, therefore, was that sug-
fci by Bar I Russell, and we earnestly
it will be the mean* for the termi-
.. .. .of« controversy whteb} but for
the forbearance shown by both parties,
would certainly have led to a ru]
