A reflection appearing in these columns con
cernina any indi vidual,, will be cheerfully cor-
reeted if brought to the attention of the Editor.
It is not t<4> early to pay your
poll tax. Do It. now and ad'vold thu
rush.
Denison has a side walk spitting
ordinance, and the city marshall is
arresting violators of the law.
It lo k.s like Texas will have a gain
of five dr ix congressmen when the
census is coufhted. The gi/dad ol i
state jusl. keeps on growing.
There are over 260,000 acres of
land in Smith can my that are not
in cultivation. Probably 75 per cent
of it can be turned into good farms.
Smith colíniy is one ol' the best
■watered counties |n the state, and
Tyler is one of the best watered cities.
-Come to Smith county and 'be happy.
When a man after twenty y¿ars'
service has nothing to offer tela peo-
ple to gain their support except a
smell at the pork barrel, it Is a pity,
an awful pity.
Smith county is the only county ia
Texas where there u «orne kind of a
crap beingé marketed ten months in
the year. Seekers t f bonnes should
¡remember this fact.
11 Tyler should take a notion thai
it could navigate (pLuckfctrk, we pre-
sume, the Oonmurcial Club would
banquet Senator Bailey. Men who
can be shipped into submission are
ntot men, they are puppies.
educating the other half should make
the Mime nation even greater. But
we do agree with the senator when
l:e said, "Good schools, good roads and
good farms end yotf have a country
fit to receive God's richest blessings."
A Tyler citizen is trying to get a
young horse thief pardoned from the
(penitentiary, claiming that he was
temporarily insane when he annexed
the wrong harte, and that his ail-
ment will became permanent If he 1
not released. The question now
arises: If a vfoung man temporarily
insane will Bteal one horse, how
many will he take if he becomes
permanently afflicted? It wtlll per-
haps be cheaper to keep the young
man locked tip than to lock up all
the horses in the <Jountry.—Jackson-
ville Banner.

And sympathizers are entirely with
Roosevelt in his fight for decent
methods in politics and honesty in
business methods. There Is nothing
iu Che cry of Wall street that Roose-
velt wauls lo It" king, emperor, dicta-
tor and so on, of this coii'ntry. He Is
trying to route these fellows from
their warm place, which is a position
favored in the laws of the country and
they are squealing like pigs and bawl-
ing like calves about to be weaned.
We wish Roosevelt were a Democrat,
he is good enough to be one.
These fellows who have the award-
ing of the Carnegie hero fund must
have been In the hole at some time
or another, judging lroni the way
they esteem the act of getting a fellow
«.■lit of a well.
The ceuxnua places the population of
Iowa at 2,224,771. This is a decrxtse
of 7028 from the 1900 census. Iowa
is one of the few states'of the Union
that shows a decrease in population.

A sflory coines from Houston that a
milk man was fined for adding one
gallon of water to four gallons of
milk. Such a thirs could not hap-
pen in Dallas, for Dallas has not the
water.
Tyler real estate is constantly on
the Increase. The man who buys a
home today, even if it Is a modest
one, will not regret it In the years that
are to came. Buy a home today.
Make the start now of accumulating
something in life. Tyler dirt will nev-
er he any cheaper.
Up in Kansas City, William Volker,
president af the board of public wel
fare, fined two boys $50 each and
sentenced them to regular attendance
each Sunday at charch for a period of i
six months. The boys wore convicted
of throwing eggs at pedestrians. Whan
eggs are 40 cents a dozen and they

LirrLK CONSOLATION FOR DEMO-
CRATS.
Several hundireds yards more pave-
ment is to be built tn Tyler at once.
The year 1910 will sl^nw more side-
walk building in this goodly city than
have been done in any five years
previous.
However the New York state elec-
lion may go tomorrow there will bo
little rejoicing by the honest Demo-
crats of the nation. Tammany dominat-
ed the convention, which nominated
the Democratic ticket in New York,
and Tammany is controlled by party
bosses who are themselves dominates
by special interests. In that state the
party standing for pure politics and
government by the people is the Re-
publican party.
LETS CO AFrER TWO THINGS.
if Tyler shall get a new railroad
and build pie East Texas Fair within
the next ten months, she will have
mude progress. If fhe fails to do
these things, she is at a standstill
and we may as well as confess It.
And a city, which stands still lit
times like these, when prices are high
and there is unparaHed activity, in
the land, then under ordinary con-
ditions «itch a city will surely go
backward.
The men of Tyler shtould take hold
with a will and determination, and
piwft as they do thplr individual btfsi-
nesses these projects to success. In
"Killed, 3,804; injured, 82,£74"—
this to the casualty record af the irail-
roadtt in the United States during the
'year ended Juno 30, last, according
to the interstate commerce commis-
sion. It is an increase Of 1,013. in the
number killed and 18,454 in the num-
ber Injured over the previous year's vlxty days after the fair and a new
figures. There were 5,861 collisions. ¡ railroad is assured, there will not be
killing 433 people and injuring 7,7( 5' a vacant house in this city, and In
and damaging railroad property >4,- sixty days after work begins on the
fair and a new railroad, people will be
living in tents, awaiting the comple-
tion of houses.
Let us center our efforts and work
as one man for these two enter-
prises.
629,279. In the 5,910 derailments

Over in iShreveport. the other day,
several thousand visitors to the fair
were very much disappointed because
the aviation stunt was not pulled off.
The fact of the business is, the avia-
tor, was a Frenchmau with an un-
pronounceable name, got into a
game of craps and was arrested and
placed in jail. It is difficult to Im-
agine the type 'of man who would
prefer a game of craps to making a
flight in an airship. Anyway, the vis-
itors to the fair that day didn't see
';he flying machine.
Now let us all hope that Mar. Col-

nor. Texas is our state and Oolquiti
is our governor, let us be loyal to
both so long as their destinies are

The city of Waco has at last waked
up to the fact that natural advant-
ages will not make a city, nor keep a
city from going backward. Judging
from the picture of the Cotton Palace
building in yesterday's New.-. Waco
(has done a handsome thing In this
structure, Let us aU wish our newly
awakened sister city God speed in the
race for development.
Just the reverse is the case in New
Jersey. In that state the democratic
ticket, headed by Woodrow Wilson,
stand's for just the things and
measures for which the Republican
ticket stand in New York, and the
Republican ticket in New Jersey ia
much the counterpart of the Demo-
cratic ticket in New York.
We do not agree with Senator
Bailey when he said at Waco In
sustance that an educated ''woman
Is an abomination." Women aro one-
half of the human race and the men
reason, be loss than that of certain
neighbors. We take this as proof
positive that children are more ad-
vanced in learning an Intelligence
than they were in the old days.
THAT BOUNDARY DISPUTE.
New Mexico claims that Texas has
extended its boundary from two to
three and thrtee-fofurths miles oven-
onto her territory. Uncle Dick !Bon-
nor has always said Texas was so big
she had to double up her arms to
keep from lying on Arkansas and
Louisiana. We would like to know
what he has to say about her north-
western boundary since New Mexico
has registered her complaint. Maybe
in getting her corporoeiiy out of the
way of Arkansas and Louisiana, Texas
lias been obliged to overlap a little
of New Mexico, We suggest to Uncle
Dick If the question comes up before
the next legislature that he make
it plain to that body, or any body
else, that Texas has got to be big, and
if New Mexico is located so near
the eastern boundary of Arkansas
and l uisiana that Texas lia not
room to lie between them, and that
youngster will simply have to move
back out of her way or suffer the
consequences.
For several centuries an Infusion
There is a good deal of discussion
in many of the daily papers concern-
ing the "hip pocket movement," or
the fellow who is always ready to
use his gun. If the legislature will
make, it a p&nitentlnry offense for a
man to be caught with a pistol on,
it wiM stop a whole' lot lot' killings that
nre going every day throughout this
state.—Tyler Courier-Times.
That's It. Hike off to the Ixfgisla-
lure for a remedy when we already
have plenty of law on the subject.
What we need Is jurymen who will
give justice Ho the people as well as
the accused. We need to reform the
sentiment of the people .s.> that when
a mnn is guilty ol a .shotting or a
murder, the jury «will give him the
punishment that fits the crime. Hun-
dreds of man-killers are running
loose in Texas who, if they had justice
dione them, would be serving terms
In the penitentiary rr In the next
world. Jurymen are too tender-heart-
ed or too susceptible to the wiles of
the able advocates in court, and the
íesuüt is that they dlo the people ¡u
justice.—'Marshall Messenger.
