bow become dense and numerous clus-
ters; cloudy specs are spacious fields,
thickly sprinkled with sparkling orbs •
or an a continued sheet of lambent
flame wildly twisted into spiral masses;
single stars are separated into double
and multiple components, beautified by
a variety of color and a depth of tint.
Some are seen revolving in duplicate,
and others in triplicate, around each
other, and still farther carried to such a
degree of complexity as almost to
baffle the searching analysis of mathe-
matical investigation. Nebulas assume
new shapes and become more luminous.
Instead of the 8,000 stare observed by
the naked eye in all directions, we now
reckon our galaxy alone to contain
at least eighteen millions, visible through
opticle aid.
Instead of one solitary milky way,
we number some four thousand nebulas,
unseen except by the telescopic eye,
and many ot them estimated equal to
our own magnitude. There is also a
variety in thete luminous tracts, some
-even seeming to be diffused suns filling
a large orbital area. We likewiss ob-
serve variable stars, increasing and di-
minishing their lustre, and differing in
periods of circulation. Indeed, the
depths of the heavens surpass the sur-
face in evi ry particular of wonder.
Even the modest members of our own
system become augmented in import-
ance. Sublimity shines through the
telescope. Mercury and Venus are
found to pass thiou-h.all the lunar
phases to our assisted vision, as we do
to the outer planets; the crescent, the
halfmoou, the gibbous phase and the
full, occur to them in regular succes-
sion. Mars presents his gibbous dusk.
Jupiter discloses his little quaternion
of satellites revolving around a spher-
oidal form encircled by remarkable
belts. Saturn's dull leaden appearance

The London Punch has the following
among other lees brilliant hits at the
Roanas :
Advice to the Ordnance.—Spare no
expeiiee in increasing the calibre of
your guns. It will be a greater bore to
the enemy than to us.
One Comfort.—Hardly our poor fel-
lows may fare in the Crimea, but the
Emperor of Russia won't have Turkey
this Cristinas.
Hint from Koaaath,—In attacking
the Rumian bear, jtm will find no
weapon efficient unless you employ a
Pole.
A Yankee propoees that hereafter the
Governors proclaim thanksgiving day
on condition that poultry is not to be
over ten cents a pound.
An old printer of our acquaintance
remarks that the lite commander of the
Baltic fleet went out one of the last last
Napier presses, and came back an old
Ramage. That the uninitiated may
appreciate the comparison, we would
remark that the Ramage bears the same
relation to the last fast Napier that the
old tobacco roller does to the locomo-
tive.
M. W. M. of the Grand Lodge of
Masons in Ohio, states, in his annual
communication, that the original cause
of the present insunvction in China
was the cruel order of the Emperor for
ti suppression of the * Triads," a kind
of Masonic fraternity in the Celestial
Empire. Several distinguished mem-
bers of that order are said to have been
massacred in the most brutal way.
The London Times speaks of the
Cossacks as they appeared at the recent
battles m the Crimea, as resembling
•'mounted Yankees, in their agility,
intelligence, irregular costume, and in-
dividual self-reliance."
I recollect once being in Europe, says
a writer in the Mobile Register, when
the United States Minister tp Prussia
was dead drunk at Brussels—the Lon-
don Consul enjoying himself at Paris—
the Chargé to Belgium somewhere on
the Rhine—the Minister to Spain in
London, and our representative to Aus
tna returning home at his own pace
through Italy. A position abroad is
not given with an eye to the welfare
of the country, but to satisfy the de-
mands of bankrupt politicians.
Mrs. Partington.—" The lad is very
desultory in his reading," said Dr.
Digg, taking up a copy of " The Seven
Robbers of the Dark Cave, or the Mys-
tery of the Bloody Dagger," that Ike
had left a few moments before The
satan turned over the leaves, looking at
the picture of the seven robbers bury-
ing their booty in a tomb, while the
witch of the cliff made incantations
over it to insure its safety.
" I don't think he takes to dysentery
reading." said Mrs. Partington, her ear
not precisely catching the word; his
mind has no tenderness towards doc-
tor's books, and he only reads hysteri-
cal works like that. I'm sometimes
afeared that he will wear himself out
by his studious and secondary habits."
She probably meant sedentary; but
the Doctor thought there was no dan-
ger, as he caught a view of Ike upon
the shed, throwing snowballs at a fat
man over in an adjacent yard.
Since it has become the fashion for
men to confess their past errors very
freely in books, it is boldly asserted
that there is no material difference be-
tween an auto-biography and a' naughty'
biography.
Late foreign papers tell us that Father
MatUew has gone to Madeira for his
health. It appears to us rather odd
that an apostle of Temperance should
resort to Madeira for relief.
Dr. P., who is attached to a Parisian
theater in quality of a physician, ex-
pressed his astonishmei t that man and
woman were not created at the same
time, instead of the latter springing
from the rib of our first parent. A
young actress standing by, remarkable
for the graceful turn which she ever
gives to the expression of her ideas,
said, " Was it not natural, sir, that the
flower should come after the stem ?"
" Boys," said a village pedagogue the
other day, " what is the meaning of all
that noise in the school ?"
"It is Bill Sikes, sir, who is all the
time imitating a locomotive."
"Come up, here, William; if you
have turned into a locomotive, it is high
time you wore switched off."

The Fighting Powers of Differ-
ent Nations.—The French, proverbi-
ally a brave and excitable people, are
brilliant and formidable in an attack.
If repulsed, a revulsion equally violent
usually takes place, and would often
have proved fatal, if it were not for the
precaution of placing reserves. When
these are not wanting, they are capable
of being easily rallied, and their lively
spirit is soon restored. The Kussians
are less excitable, but in an attack they
cannot be surpassed in bravery and per*
severance by the troops of any Euro-
pean nation, with this advantage, that
they appear to be incapable of panic,
and though they may be repulsed and
defeated, they cannot be forced to run
in confusion from the field of battle.
The Prussian armies engaged in these
battles, were not, for the most ]«rt,
very young soldiers; a spirit of enthus-
iasm pervaded their ranks, which ren-
dered them capable of the most bril-
liant achievments. In cases of defeat,
the effects of momentary hurry and
confusion, to which ell young troops
are liable, were less vn.lent with them
than the French; but, though easily
rallied, and their patriotic fotiliusiasm
easily restored, they cannot nvai the
Russian stoicism in adversity. The
Austrians, properly so called, w*
both highly disciplined and brave,
but the infantry of that race appeared
deficient in energy, when compared
with the French or Prussians, and their
physical powers could not be compared
with the sturdy Russian soldiery. The
Bohemians seem to be more healthy
and robust, but did not appear to dif-
fer in point of national character from
their Austrian brethren in arms. The
Hungarian infantry were decidedly
superior to both in point of energy and
physical power, and the select corps of
Qrenadiere* furnished by that nation
were equal, if not superior, to any in
tha field.—Cathcart's Commentaries.
"The Russians are Coming —A

It is said here on Tery good authority
that the Russian Baltic fleet will oome
out of Cronstadt and take a cruise after
tha English fleet hare retired from the
tha North in consequence of tha ap-

Copy of a Letter from J. Noble, Esq, Mayor
of Boston, Lincolnshire, England.
To Professor Hollowat,
Dear -ir,—Mrs. -arah Dixon, of Liquor-
pond st., Boston, has this day deposed before
me that for a considerable period she was se-
verely afflicted with Scrofulous • ores and Ul-
cers in her arms, feet, legs, and other parts of
her body; and although the first of medical
advice was obtained, at the cost of a large sum
of money, she obtained no abatement of suf-
fering, but gradually grew worse.
Buing recommended by a friend to try your
Ointment, she procured a small pot, and a box
of the Pills, and before that was all used,
S3'm( toms of amendment appeared. By per-
severing with the medicines for a short time
longer, according the directions, and strictly
adhering to your rules as to diet, Ac., she was
perfectly cured, and now enjoys the best of
health.
I remain, Dear Sir, yours truly,

To Professor Hollow ay,
?ir—I suffered for a considerable time from
severe attack of Erysipelas, which at length
settled in ray ieg, and resisted all medical
treatment. My sufferngs were very great,
and I quite despaired of any permanent
amendment, when I was advised to have re-
course to your Ointment and Pills. I did so
without delay, and am happy to say the result
was eminently successful, for they effected a
radical cure of my leg and restored me to the
enjoyment of health. I shall ever speak with
the utmost confidence of your medicines, and
have recommended thein to others in this
neighborhood similarly afflicted, who derived
equal benefit.
I am, Sir, your obliged and faithful serv't.
