heavy south wind blew, but on '

Mi
of the scene, it was from
North.
The Meteor had forty-eight passengers,
besides the crew, all of whom were saved.
That $uch a calamity should follow so
early in the"wake of the lndépendence, is
lamentable, and verifies the tritj^old adage
thatmisfortunes never come alone."
Those with whom we have conversed,
including Mr. Armstrong, of New Or-
leans, speak in the; highest terms of Cap-
tain Forbes and the officers.
This is the third vessel lost at the Pass
within the la^t two years, though they are
the only ones IoSt within five or six years;
yet iu two orthese cases, there had been
buoys on the bar, no accident would have
occurred.
We \mré not been able as yet to get a
list of the passengers and consignees of
the Meteor, but shall publish them when
obtained. She was considered one of the
finest and fastest vessels on the Southern
Waters; was built and owned by Messrs.
Harris & Morgan, and gave every prom-
ise of a long and profitable career. She
is the fourth vessel lost by those gentle-
men within á period of sixteen months,
to wit: the Palmetto at Pass Cavallo, the
Globe at Brasos Santiago, and the Gal-
veston on Ship Island Shoals, amounting
in the aggregate to abont $250,000 of en-
tire loss to tliem, as they do not insure.
We trust the Government will now be
induced to be stow some means at our
Pass, and that we may have the lights and
buoys, to which, by the magnitude of our
commerce, we are justly entitled. We
feel assured that had this been done,
neither of these wrecks would have oc-
curred.
Vkje have been unable to learn any of
the áfSfoial details attending this sad af-
fair, and content ourselves with stating
the facts so far as they have been report-
led to us by persons who aided in carrying
pawHJUgers. Should other fact*
¡¡worthy of mention couie to im. knowledge,
weshaii of course give tlieui to our readers.
JiVe confidently look forward to the day
when improvements shall be made to make
the bar one of the deepest and safest on
the Gulf. It is practicable and easy of
accomplishment, and where there is in the
prospective such a demand for large ves-
sels, there can be no doubt that it will be
brought about. We well recollect that in
the early history of Galveston bar, wrecks
were common, but of late years, since it
has become well known, and supplied with
a light ship and buoys, accidents rarely
ever occur. Iudeed the late accident of
the ship Milam is the only one weremeni'
ber for years. So it will be here whenever
justice is done. During the year 1846
large ntlmhers of Government vessels,
some drawing over tea feet, were brought
iuto this bay and no accident occurred.
In the spring of 1847, we think, one or
Wo did take place, but without pilots be-
ing on board; and from that time till
Jántiáry, 1850, no fesse 1 wa9 lost. The
three steamers, Palmetto, Independence,
and Meteor, have all been lost since the
latter date. But had there been buoys on
the bar, the two first, if not' the last of
these vessels, would have suffered no loss.
. UgbtHonscs, Buoyiu &c.
We arc almost daily reminded of the
necessity of a light house and buojrs pn
Wr bar. The loss of asinglcsteamál^pis
quadruple the cost of a light and a suffi-
cient number of buoys to render the en-
trance to Matagorda Bay safe and con-
venient It is ajust ground of complaint
on the part of Western Texas against the
gavernnrtnt, when there is not a single
buoy on our bar nor in the Bfcy. In the
absence of these safeguards to navigation
wrecks ui«st occur even at the ,most fa-
vorecí passes; it bohooves our delegation
iu Congress to urge this subject j&poh its

The principal feature in the local news is
the overflow of the Sacramento and San
Joaquin rivers, and the freshet which has
visited the mining region North and
South.
San Francisco has been unusually free
from excitement since the steamer of the
1st departed. The passage of an ordi-
nance sustaining the Col ton grants, by the
Common Council of San Francisco, awak-
ened the ire of its citizens',' and a public
meeting, petition and protést were got up
against it. But Mayor Harris has repeal-
ed the measure, aud there it is thought, it
will die. Crime has displayed an impu-
dent front in the "City within the fortnight,
and daring burglaries were of almost
nightly occurrence The police were un-
equal to the increase of roguery, and the
Vigilance Committee had been convened,
and were e£aged in active and systematic
criminal - detecting operations. One or
two hostile meetings, according to the
approved code of Duello, had again recent-
ly taken place in the vicinity of San
Fraucisco. An affair of honor between
one of the State Seuators and the son of
an Ex-Governor, had been the topic of
much public conversation.
From Hong-Kong, news had been re-
ceived at San Francisco to the '29th of
December, of the destruction of nearly
the whole ofthhfc city, atid a number of
lives, by fire. The amount of property
destroyed was estimated at §>4,000,000.
From Honolula, Sandwich Islands dates
had been received to the 21st ult. A few
coasting schoOners*bad bfeen lost at Han-
alei, Kanai. From Tahiti, Society Island,
Jan. 17th, information had been received
that the rule of the French and Queen
Pomare has grown so weak, that there is
danger of the ^government being over-
turned by a " República " party. Froéi
Valparaiso, dates had been received to the
26th January. A brisk tide of emigra
tion is again setting towards California
from that couhtry.'
Additional tidings of marine disasters
continue to be received from Oregon.

STOP THE VILLAIN!
BOUT the fourth of March last. I hired a
man, named FRANCIS MAY, to work on
my farm in La Vacca county. On the evening
of the 2d April, he came to me stating that he
was going to get married on the following day
and wished to get some money. I handed him
ten dollars. He then packed his clothes, took a
fine blooded mare of mine, and has not been
heard of since.
Said May is about twenty-seven years old,
five feet seven or eight inches high; pale blue
or greyish eyes, with down-cast look in conver-
sation ; rather stoop-shouldered; has the letters
S. M. on the right arm. Had on a black al-
pacca sac coat; rode off a new black Spanish
saddle, and a new pair of saddle-bags, with
patent leather covers.
The mare is a grey common-sized American
mare, six years old; a little flea-bitten about
the head and neck, and paces finely.
I will give $75 for the delivery of the mare,
or I will give $>125 for the mare and thief, de-
livered to me, five miles west of Hallettsville,
La Yacca county, Texas.
