A Nobleman's Noblest Act.
The editor of " Dofrett'a Peer-
ago" sends this anocdole to tho
London Timos:
"In the spring of 1850 Lord
Fairfax was walking homo, accom-
panied by tho Chief Justice of Cal-
ifornia and two other friends, when
r be was met by h reporter of the
/.art, irtuirod Henry V«. Lee,
* .,-Jving thought Lord Fairfax had
in soiuo way tried to injure him,
accused hint of ho doing, a chargo
which his lordship denied. To this
denial Lee rejoined In an insolent
and offenaivo manner, substantially
giving tho lio, evidently desiring
that Lord Fair lux should strike
him; he effected bis objoct, his
lordship striking him on tho fueo.
Lee, in return, struck at him with
light cuno, within which was con-
cealed a long daggor, Lord Fair-
fax caught tho cune in his left
Imnd ; Leo sprung back, drew the
dagger quickly l'ront tho eano, and
indicted two terrible wound*, uno
through tho loft broast, and the
other in tho side. Lord Fairfax
had drawn n Derringer pistol, and
presented it, cockod, in time to pro-
vont Loo making a third thrust.
In a moment Lee threw up bis arms
and cried out, " Don't kill mo [ urn
unarmed." (All this occurred in
an inerodibly short spaco of time,
beforo any one hud timo to inter-
fere, or even realise that a deadly
assault had boon made.) Standing
perfectly still, Lord Fntrliix (ti
splendid shot,) who had him cov-
ered, at not more than six foot dis
tant, and could have killod him be
yond any possible dpuht, thus re
Elied,' \ ou miserable coward, you
avo murdered me—you have as
sassinated me—and I havo your
worthless life in my hands; but for
the sake of your wil'e and child i
«hall sparo you." Cries, at this
were raised from tho crowd of
'Shoot him Fairfax!' 'Kill him!'
' Don't spnro him!' and tho like.
Standing erect, looking Lee full in
tho face, and holding the pistol as
before, Lord Fairfax answered,
'No, 1 won't kill him!' and thpn
addressing Lee, nuid, ' Recollect, 1

A Brave Boy.
The New York Sun gives the
: following account of n rcuent occur
trence of a very affecting character,
'which took place ou an English
steamer:
A little ragged boy uged nine
¡yours, was discovered on the fourth
jduy of the outward voyago from
.Liverpool to New Fork, and car
Tied belorc the first mate, whose
'duty it was to deal with such ca-
ses. When questioned as to the
object of his being stowed away
and who brought him on board,
the boy, who had a beautiful, sunny
¡face, and eyes that loqked like the
very mirrors of truth, replied that
his stepfather did it, because he
could not afford to keep hint, nor
to pay his passage out to Halifax,
where he liad an aunt who was well
oil', and to whose house he Was
going. The mute did not believe
the story, in «pito of the winning
luco and truthful accents of the
boy. lie had seen too much of
stow-awuys to be easily deeieved
by them, he said ; and it was his
Urm conviction that lie had Leon
brought ou board and provided
with food by the sailors. The
little fellow was very roughly
bundled in consequence. Day after
duy he was questioned and rcques-
tioned, but always with the same
result, lie did not know a mil lor
on board, and his stepfatiter alone
hud sccretcd him and given liitu
the food which he ate.
At last tho mate, wearied by
the boy's persistence in the same
story, and perhaps a little anxious
to inculpate the sailors, sere® him
one day by the collar and dragging
him forward, told him that unless
he confessed tho truth in ten min-
utes from that time lie would hang
him on tho yard arm. lie then
made him sit down under it on the
deck. All aroutid him were the
passengers and sailors of the mid-
day watch, and in front of him
stood tho inexorable male, with
his chronometer in his hand, and
tho other officers of the ship by
his side. It was the finest sight,
says our informant, tliut we ever
beheld, to see the pule, proud, sor-
rowful lace ol that noble buy—
his head erect, his beautiful eyes
bright through the tears he hud
shed. The mate told him lie had
but two minutes to live, and advis-
ed him to speak the truth and save
his life; but lie replied, with the
utmost simplicity and sincerity, by
asking tho mate if he might pray.
The mule said nothing but nod-
ded his head, and turned as pale
us a ghost, and shook with trem-
bling like a reed with the wind.
And there, all eyes turned on him
this brave and noble fellow, this
poor waif whom society owned not.
and whose own stepfather could
not care for—there he knelt with
clasped hands and eyes upraised
to heaven, while lie repeated au-
dibly the fiord's Prayer, und pray-
ed tho dear Lord Jesus to take
him to heaven.
Our inlbinant adds there then
occurred a sceuo us of Pentecost.
Sobs broke from strong, haul
hearts, as the mute sprang iorward
to the boy and clasped him to his
bosom, and kissed him and blessed
him, and told him how sincerely*
ho now believed his story, und how
glad lie was that he had been
bravo enough to face death and
lie willing to sncrilicc his life for
tho truth of his own word.
