Mrs Bailey very' charmingly
enertained the club last Thuas-
day. A large number of the
members were present and the
afternoon was pleasently spent.
Salted nuts were passed during
the afternoon and delicious fruit
salad with cream and cake were
served when the club work was
finished. Mrs Bailey was assist-
ed by Mrs Williams.
The Ladies Aid of the Chris-
tian Church gave its monthly tea
at Mrs Pope's Monday afternoon
from which they realized $7.70.
This is more than the ladies have
taken in at any previous time and
they wish to thank all those who
were kind and thoughtful enough
to attend.
It takes tact and ability to or-
ganize a show that will be well
balanced in all departments, viz,
a good band and orchestaa, good
specialties, and if a dramatic
show, a dramatic strong enough
to win recognition without the
other features, Mr Eiler possess-
es this ability.

JEW3 MASTERS OF CHESS.
The chess championship has been
retained in Jewish hands for the last
42 years. Steinitz hold it for 38
¡years till 1894, and Lasker has been
champion ever since. Dr. Lnsker at-
tributes this predominance of the
Jewish genius in chess to the fact
that its rules are entirely based upon
{fose of self-defense in the struggle
oi life, and the Jews are adepts in
ithfc art—Jewish Chronicle.
