jjives the following additional points contained
in the veto of the Colorado bill. The docu-
ment is brief, but pointed. It shows the gross
inequality on which the largely populated
States would be placed by the admission of
Colorado, The President cites the foot that
the present basis of representation is a repre-
sentation for one hundred and twenty thous-
and population, while Colorado has but 30,000
inhabitants. He adds that the new State
while New York with four millions of people
only has 33. He also speaks of the injustice
to tne eleven other States of the Dnion which

Mr. Smythe has assumed tbe Collectorship
of the port of New York,
Chas. Kelsey's Cotton warehouse at Brook-
lyn was burned to-day, with a large quantity
of cotton and several other buildings. The
loss is heavy, but the amount has as yet not
been ascertained.

House.—Tho bill passed to provide lor the
safety of- passengers ou steamships. It con-
tains a section against the transportation of
nitro glycerine.
The House went into Committee of the
Whole on the state of the Union and sub-
sequently resumed the consideration of the
tax bill.
Fortress Monroe, May 16.—As a sequence
to Secretary McCulloch's late visit President
Johnson has directed the surgeon of the post
to make a special report on the health of Mr.
Davis. .
Brooklyn, N. Y., May 10.—The cotton pick-
ing establishment of F. B. Blanchard Si Co.,
and its contents were destroyed by fire this
morning.
Mobile, May 17.—Lightning struck the city
warehouse this afternoon, burning five hun-
dred bales of cotton.
New York, May 16.—(Per steamer Java.)
—Vienna—Prussia is said to have declined all
negotiations on the question of Duchies on
the basis proposed by Austria. Prussia has
declared to the Diet that the warlike prepar-
ations on her part are entirely defensive. The
Austrian reply to the last Prussian note was
conciliatory, but she declines to d sarin under
the present circumstances.

clared to the Diet that the warlike relations
on her part are entirely defensive. The Aus-
trian reply to the Prussian note was concilia-
tory, but declines to disarm underthe circum-
stances.
Warlike preparations in Vienna are poshed
energetically.
It is rumored that Venetia will soon be
placed in a state of siege.
Nothing has been heard of the steamer City
of Washington, sinoe the Propentis left her.

Quarantine; May 16.—Gen. Dulce has re-
turned from the Isle of Pines, and is preparing
to leave via New York. His successor, Gen.

The Peruvian iron-clad Huasco gave chase
to two Spanish vessels off the coast of Brazil,

The fiscal budget for the years 1865 and
