THE OLD AND THE NEW TEAK.
This is the last day of the year '66—u year
fraught with events bigger in importance and
grander in their results than any which pre-
ceded it since that in which the angels saug
their midnight Te Deum over the Babe of Beth-
leharn. One year ago this nation was tern
and bleeding from intestine war.
Hostile armies were hurling death through-
out all our borders. To-day all is peace. No
bayonet stops the peaceful traveler, and the
starry flag of the Federal Union waves in
triumph over all the land. 'Tis true that there
is a voice of warning, but it is for ^e past not
the present. We weep for the dead, but re-
joice for the living nation.
As the heat of war subsides, our national
elements congeal into one homogenoous whole.
Well may the American people rejoice and be
glad.
The first day of the year has always been
celebrated as a holiday. This was as true in
pagan as in the Christian epoch.
' The old Romans kept up a perfect saturnalia
on this day, against whioh practice the ancient
Church Mminated many a fierce protest In
ah old book, we find that "Thé whole Catho-
lioke church appointed a solemn publike faste
upon this our new yeare's day, to bewail those
heathenish enterludes, sports, and lewd idola-
trous practices, whioh had been used on it;
prohibiting all Christians, under pain of ex-
communication, from observing the calends or
first of January (which wee now call new
yeare's day) as holy, and from sending abroad
new yeare's gifts upon it (a custome now too
frequent,) it being a mere relique of pagan-
ismo and idolatry, derived from the heathen
Romans' feast of two-faced Janus, and a prac-
tice so execrable unto Christians, that not
onely the whole Catholioke church, but even
the four famous councils of (here follows a
long array of authorities) have positively pro-
hibited the solemnization of new yeare's day,
and the sending abroad of new yeare's gifts,
under an anathema and excommunication."
Either for good or ill, this interdict has
long ceased, and we all celebrate New Year's
Day with rejoicing and festivity. One of the
customs that obtain over a very large portion
of our country is the pleasant one of-drinking
egg-nogg.
The Dutch who settled in New York intro-
duced a custom, which is now widely ex-
tended, of making New Year's calls. Each
gentleman makes it apart of his social duty to
call upon all ladies to whose acquaintance
he can make the shadow of a claim; and as at
each of these he finds refreshments, the con-
sequence is that long before nightfall, most of
the callers are in such a delightful state of ^
chicken salad that, for the life of them, they I CEDAR SHINGLES.

Durell is a New Orleans lawyer, of mora than
ordinary attainments, though we hava never
heard him rated as a jurist of eminence. He
was President of the famous Constitutional
Convention, during the session of which he
made some very singular decisions. On the
bench he is generally esteemed honest, and
very careful, adhering rather to the decisions
and rules laid down in the books than seeking
to dovelop the great principles that are the
foundation of law for himeelf.
