Lima, August 1—A letter
from General Mas, regarding
his action while in command
of the expedition to the
southern provinces, has beeij
published. lie praises the
loyalty of the troops to the
government, but acknowledges
being harrassed by the in-
trigues of penons boasting to
be friends of the government.
He says tho revolution would
have been crushed had he been
allowed to engage tho enemy
after the fight at Izsencuaca.
and when at length permission
was obtained the rebels had
so profited by the delay as to
render any attack very un-
advisable.
The Bishop of Lima has
sent an address to Mon*
seigneur Torre, minister of
justice, protesting against the
proposed Masonic hall to be
ceded in Lima. The minis-
ter has replied in strong terms,
deprecating the publicity given
to his protest by the bishop,
but assuing him that in virtue
of the constitution the govern-
ment has not permitted, and
never will permit, the erection
of a Masonic temple in Lima.
Dublin, August I-A meet-
ing of shareholders and credi-
tors of the Minister bank has
been called for Monday, to
discuss the question of revival
of the bank. It is rumort d
that another branch manager
is missing.
London, August 1—It is ex-
pected that the land purchase
bill will be shelved.
KOTUING HUT A NEW
YORK LAWYER.
The five Points mission,—
the old brewery—is better
known in the country, perhaps,
than in New York, through
til"! appeals for aid that have
been made in Sunday schools
and churches throughout the
land for the last quarter of a
i
century and the circulation of i
a little paper bearing the
latter's name. Accordingly
Sunday-school superintendents
and teachers passing a Sunday
in New York seldom fail to
visit the institution a9 one of
the sights of the great city.
Their services are often called
into requisition to take the
places of absent teachers, and
some times thev are invited
to make addresses after the
lessons have been recitcd. A
few Sundays ago a young man
visited the mission and was
asked by tho superintendent
to take charge of a class of
boys.
''Well, boys," said he, taking
his seat and opening the Bi-
ble, "what is the lesson to-
d*yT
"Oh bother tho lesson/' re-
plied one of the hopeful pupils.
"Visitors never hear our les-
sons; they tell us stories."
''What sort of a storv shall
L tell you?" asked the young
man, somewhat abashed.
"Tell ns all abont the place
you come from," was the re-
ply.
"He didn't come from no-
where," up spoke an urchin in
the corner, in a tone of ineffa-
ble contempt. "He don't
know nothing worth tel ing-
He's nothing but a New York
lawyer; I've shined his boots
many a time."—New York
