We are glad to see Hon.

Mr. Reutfro is receiv^
telegrams of congratylation
and promises of support from
all parts of the district. He
has been requested to address
the citizens of Cuero assem-
bled en masse.
Our new republican con-
temporary promises to be a
kid-glove sort of an organ. It
indulged in the biggest sort of
a meal of pi while yet in the
first processes of incubation.
If it has pie to nurse on; to-
wards the cud it may have

course.
A long walk through the
rain and mud from town to
the ferry on this side, and one
nearly as long from the boat
landing ro the hacks on the
other. In thisscction neither
the authorities or the mono-
polies consult the conveni-
ence of the (elsewjhere) "dear
public.1'
The talk on the streets fa-
vors the candidacy of Bontfro
for congress, and many of the
rancheros are supporting him.
Were not so many democrats
already pledged for Craine
there is no doubt that our lo-
cal candidato would sweep
the whole vote of this county
in November.
The Harris was detained at
Galveston yesterday on ac-
count of the threatening
weather, but sailed from there
for Brazos at 8 o'clock this
morning. She is due here to-
morrow morning early. Gen.
Cuellar, Mr. Mayberry and
Mr. Giomila and vvife are ex*
pected on her.
At a baile on Saturday
night at Point Isabel, Anto-
nio Rendon assaulted Pedro
Corrubias with an iron bar,
striking him on the head and
inflicting a terrible gash in-
juring the eye. Rendon was
arrested and locked up in a
box car, but escaped as lie
was being taken to get some
coffee in the morning. He
probably will be indicted.
The wife Of an officer on
tlie other sido of the river
having had trouble with li^r
husband, gave her child the
other day to her mother, who
brought it to this side. The
old lady on her return, was
arreáted on a charge of ab-
duction; but, while being tak-
en to jail, vyas met by a friend
who secured her release, and
she came across the river.
The wife, a couple of days
ago, deserted her hu band
and also came here to reside.
It is sail a suit for divorce is
to be instituted, and tjie case
promises to be a notable one.
|t is reported that a little
Italian boy, who lives here

driver by a person named Re-

life and promised to .charge
the gang no fare if they would
not kill him. As this was
what the assailants wanted,
they did not injure him any
more; and when near town
left the cart without paying
as they agreed for their car-
riage. We would suggest
that the authorities look into
this matter, and if the facts
are as we have heard them,
that these young ruffians be
given a lesson that will bo re-
membered by both them and
others of their ilk. We have
enough bad characters in this
section now without raising
a new crop to succeed them.
DISTRICT COURT.

Barton case last evening
brought in a verdict, giving
him two years in the peniten-
tiary. His attorney took an

Mauricio Frausto, charged
with an assault with intent to
murder Romula Mancillas by
stabbing her' with a pair of
scissors, was tried and the jury
