I^ouisvitye, Aug. 17—Mr.

answer to a question as to the
Bjai no scandal, said that be
had long ago discredited and
dismissed it from serious con
sideration He had had occa-

found pothing which could

encountered at the time noth-

BROWN STOCKINGS DOWNED-
ESCAPED—J AILED-AC-
CIDENI—ROBBED.
Dallas, Aug. 17—TheGal-
y 68 tons defeated the Brown
{Stockings in the second
league game of base ball to-
day by a score of 11 to 7.
Kebenac started in to pitch
for Galveston, but tetired
after the secoud inning, and
Curry finished the game
which was all that saved the
Galvestons from defeat, as the
Brown Stockings took kindly
to Kebenac's delivery, but
Ourry proved a wizard for
them. Curry's fine work in
the box and at the bat is the
subject of most favorable
pomment here. Crothers
only pitched three innings for
Dallas, when he was relieved
by Mansfield, who did such
good work as to hold the Gal-
vestong down to four runs in
the balance of the game. The
batteries tomorrow will be
Cruss and Ingram for Galves-
ton and Crothers and Mur-
phy for Dallas. Much inter-
est has been aroused, and ft
big crowd is looked for.
Ben Thomas and Black
Jim, alleged horsetbieves,
brought out of jail to-day to
consult counsel, escaped and
are still at Urge.
J. W. Sand crian was jailed
here today on the charge of
opening the letters of another
party at Piano. He is to
have a hearing Wednesday,
William Page, while out
hurling, was shot and killed
by the accidental discharge of
a gun while climbing a fence.
D. L. Stuart, & uell-known
sporting man, was robbed at
his room, last night, of a fine
set of diamonds and $2500 in
iiioney. Three men have
been arrested and jailed on
suspicion.
PROGRESS OF CREMATION.
Die Flainme is a monthly
paper published in Berlin aqi
devoid t > the advoeacy of
crematiou qt home and abroad,
Its J uly number gives a brief
summary of the progress made
by cremationists in America
and tturope. The Paris Crema-
tion society was founded in
18$0 and approved by the
prefect of police on December
£3 of the same year, ^he third
{WQuftl qeetmg 109k pl c§ on
January 9, 1884, and was
presided over by the mayor
of the Seventh arondissement,
Mr. Jftiechlin Schwartz, who
called the attention of those
present to the dangers that
would attend the present form
of burial in case of an epidemic
disease making its appearance.
The chairman was commis-
sioned to apply to the police
authorities for permission to
build several crematories iu
each cemetery of the capital
since both above and below
the ground a corpse is the
source of emanation poison-
ing the atmosphere, for which
evil cremation js the only
remedy. The dead after a
battle should be disposed of
in the same manner, as a vast
number of rotting corpses iu
a narrow space are almost
sure to breed disease. A bill
providing for the erection of
crematories, brought before
the French Chamber of Dep
uties, was supported by the
illustrious Gambetta, Casimir
Perier and Paul Bert, but
a measure of this kind takes
time before it becomes a law,
and iu view of the possible
appearance of the cholera the
society desires to have
crematory erected as soon as
possible. The principal
opponent of the plan is the
famous Dr Brouariel The
Paris society numbers 570
members.
In Denmark few of the
cemeteries comply with sani
tary demands. J)r. Levison, of
Copenhagen, has collected
statistics in 1652 villages and
100 towns. Nearly all the
burial places ape in the im-
mediate neighborhood of
dwelling-houses-in some rases
only fifteen yards away. Noto
and again the drinking water
in the neighborhood has been
poisoned by this contact,
The London Cremation
society was founded in 1875.
Its president is Sir Henry
Thomson. The society
purchased, in 1878, an estate
at St. John, in the county of
Surrey, where a crematory
has recently been erected,
The Philadelphia corres-
pondent assures Die Flanmie
that cremation in this city
struggless against an ignor-
ance and narrow-miuded pre-
judice that must be seen to be
appreciated. uNot only are
the ministers of the gospel op
posed to us almost to a man/'
writes this gentleman, "but
also those who in any way de-
rive a livelihood from contact
with the dead—managers of
cemeteries, undertakers and
body 8natchets, who derive a
princely income from the sale
of corpses, our medical colleges
often pnachasing as many as
thirty six in a week. The San
Francisco cremationists are
trying to raise $25,000 to
build an oven, and the New
Orleans society hopes to be
able to have one in working
order next year."— Rx.
