15th of November, President
Arthur bejjig engaged to mar-
ry Miss Tillie Frelinghuysen
on that date. The report is
not a new one, but it has as-
sumed marked defioiteness
from tbe fact that Mr. Arthur
lias recently spent three weeks
at the house of Secretary
Frelinghuysen, at Raritan, N.
,T., and is furthermore confir-
med by the fact that Miss
Tillie b s of late declined to
receive attentions from other
gentlemen.
The marriage of the presi-

pronounced the wounds as
fatal. He waited several

facilitate matters and save
him the trouble of again

out a death certificate and
started home.
For some reason or other
the man took it into his head
to get well and lie began to
grow better until he recovered
entirely. The authorities
learning of the strange proce-

Miss Frelinghuysen has been
quite popular here for several
years. -
While on this subject it
should be noted that there is
a genuine dread among a
large class of people here over
the possibility of Mrs. Blaine
becoming directness of afFiirs
at the White-house. During
the incumbency of Mr. Hayes
she was greatly shocked at
the indiscriminate character «if
Mrs. Hayes's receptions. 'I do
not believe,' said she to a well
known society lady, Mn admit-
ting common people to the re-
ceptions. It should be re-
garded as a rare privilege to
be permitted to see the inside
of the mansion.' She made the
same protest while her hus-
band was secretary of state
under Garfield, aud endeavor-
ed to inaugurate a combina-
tion among the cabiuet ladies
looking to the furtherance of
her views. Mrs. Blaine, oflate
years, since her husband be-
came a millionaire, has as-
sumed a severely aristocratic
mien, and. hus affected the
society of foreign legations,
encouraging her children to
follow suit. Walker Blaine,
her son, rarely appears in
public here except in company
with a flashy member of some
foreign legation.

THE BIG DAKOTA FARMER.
The eucalyptus tree has
hitherto been in favor for its
anti-malarial properties, which
are especially familiar, in
Australia, where it is one of
the loftiest of timber trees. It
has, however, lately lost favor
in the province of San Pedro,
Brazil, from the belief that it
stimulates the generation of a
poisonous dragon fly, which
attacks all living creatures, to
whom its sting is fatal iu a
few minutes. The destruction
of all eucalyptus trees has,
therefore, been ordered in San
Pedro.
