—■We despise croakers, bat when we
IH« tho moit important military pouts
in the Confederacy put in change of
"northern men with Southern prin-
ciples," and bj| them 'given up to
tbe Yankee com manden, it teems to
tu to utterly inconsistent with pru
deuce (Hid common, soase, thai we
dotabt whether we deserve to bo free.
When we seestich lack of fore-
sight, or sotoiethlng worse, as to leave
the most important point in the
8outh, unprpvieioned, when the Yan-
kees had strained every nerve to
take it for more thnn a year,4we. are
tempted to ask ourselves, if we de-
serve jo be free.
When we see the whole country
infested'with men who should be in
the army; one professing to be an
invalid, and another to hnve resign-
ed a commission while multitudes are
seen on the public highways under
various pretexts, át a time of most
critical emergency, we involuntarily
ask. if we deserve to be free.
When We see those who are left
al home, while the bra ye y oath ot
the country have given up all their
comfort for their country's good,
almost ignoring the existence of a
class known as soldiers, save only
their own kin, and ' spending their
time in accumulating money, we are
almost driven to the conclusion, thm
we do uot deserve to be fre, .
When we hear of rich men of tin-
country running away to save their
property, and save their families
from the insults of the brutal foe.
leaving the wives of the poor soldiers
who tire risking their lives in defense
of that property, we. confess that we
are almost tempted to exclaim, we
do not neserve to he free.
When we Bee men with subjuga-
tion and slavery stat ing them in the
face, busily occupied in grinding the
faáta of the poor, pr on the constant
watch fo^ the best trade that can be
made, even with the hard pressed
wife of an absent soldier, we almost
knock under nod admit that we do
not deserve to be free.
When we hear of men, professing
to bfl men, who api ready to give
up because Vick bti$j has fallen,
who declare that further resistance
i useless, we say tp ourselves, well
surely we do not deserve to be free.
But fittaly when we find that our
women have to throw themselves in*
to the breach and press on despond-
ing men, we come decidedly to the
conclusion, but for the fair dnaghters
o* the South, we do not deserve to be
' free.—La. Baptist.
T. J. Thomas, the editor of the
McKinney Messenger, who, hating,
been drafted under the' call of the
Governor for 10.000 Militia refused
utterly to obey the military authori-
ty whereupon he was arested by
said authority. He then sued out

plea In -oar District Court, which
