LOCAL VO. AG. NEWS
By T. G. Kockrlt — Vo. Ag. Teacher
Nice rains throughout the
county have certainly caused oat
patches and other winter crops
to "green-up" and take on a new
life of beauty. A number of out
of county people who have
stopped by the Caldwell Voca-
tional Agriculture Department
have commented on the number
of acres that they have seen
planted to winter pastures in Bur-
leson County. A representative of
a well-known agricultural pro-
duct company was very impresse d
and said that he always enjoyed
traveling through Burleson Coun-
ty during the winter for he con-
sidered this section the garden
spot of Texas because of its green
winter pastures.
Several people have inquired
about a mineral mixture that they
can keep before their cattle. V
mixture that has proven practi-
cal and economical is equal parts
of bone meal, limestone (or bet-
ter known as carbotex) and iodis-
ed stock salt. Some cattlemen
prefer to place this mixture in a
compartment next to a compart-
ment of loose stock salt. It seems
that some cattle have a greater
desire for salt than other cuttle
so this dual compartment of salt
and mineral will allow the cow
to more or less balance her own
requirements. Above all, minerals
should be protected from the
weather and this problem can l>e
solved by having range mineral
boxes covered with a sheet iron
roof.
Several months ago three or
four people asked where they
might obtain some registered
Hampshire gilts to be used for
biood sows. At the time there
were none available from the
local FFA Chapter but soon
some of the FFA boys will have
some gilts for sale. So if you a^e
interested in Hampshires, con-
tact the Caldwell Vocational Ag-
riculture Department and we will
tell you where you may obtain
some gilts that will develop into
fine brood sows.
