COMING IN "QUEEN
CHRISTINA," YEARS .MOST
DISTINCTIVE SCREEN EVENT
Plays Her Greatest Role as Fiery Regent Who
Proved Herslf as Much a Sensuous Woman
As a Dominating Queen
A new motion picture with Greta
Garoo is automatically an ev«ant: she
han been acclaimed l>y many a the
leading actress of the screen, and her
vehicle* are ho carefully Hpaeed that
it alwayw seems an extremely Ionic
time since the last one. When a Garbo
film íh directed by Hoolten Mamoulian
formerly of the Theatre Guild, the
event sivms of double importance.
And when the picture Im one whose
dialogue ha* been componed l«y S. N'.
Rehrman, author of last year'* «taire
success, "Biography," then the event
achieves a distinction almost without
precedent. This picture is "Queen
Christina," which will Im- shown Wed-
nesday and Thursday, April 4-6, at
the Matsonian Theatre.
Star Chose Role Herself
"Qut'cn Christina" is remarkable
in that it is a role chosen l>y Miss
(iarlio herself. The character of tlr.s
brilliant, independent and eccentric
regt nt of the middle seventeenth cen-
tury is one that him always attracted
the enigmatic actress, iih much I 1
cause she was of the same race us
because her intelligence and passion
for freedom were wholly modern in
their <|uality. And Sweden at that
period was an aggressive military
power whose martial mam ('hristinu
insisted on suppressing. Miss Garbo
was interested, too, in conveying this
pacifistic conviction of the <|Ucen.
Accordingly, when the actress look
one of her rare excursion." home last
Spring, she promptly proceeded to do
•nine uf the research and investigation
which she had promised Koutren Mam-
oulian she would do. Shi' consulto!
biographies and museum records und
costume plates, and, when she return
ed to Hollywood with much of thi■
material ill her trunk, she wa- mon
eager than evei to uttempt an imurnu
lion of the queen who preferred the;
cultivation of artists and sciences t'
the thankless and ruthless business o! j
wielding a sceptre.
Few choices for the composer of J
4ialogue could have l>ecii so fortunate ¡
m- that of the brilliant S N Bcht i
man. This distinguished playwright
has been responsible for some of the
wittiest comedies produced in the New
Vork theatre fur the last seven or
eight years. And the incisive, pene-
trating statements characteristic of
Christina could scarcely have been
penned by a more skillful hand.
And Mamoulian as the director of
"Queen Christina" was really the fin-
al touch. The man who had directed
"Porgy," "Marco Millions," "Congai,"
"It. U. K." and "The Came of Love
and Death" for the Theatre Guild was
clearly the man with meguphone for
the splendor and glamour of a st , y
involving the powerful Swedish court
of three centuries back. His effort was
of the kind he had made with all his
stage productions: a reduction to es-
sence and to general style instead of
u literal reproduction of the architec-
ture and costume of the period. Thus,
all of the gowns worn and all of the
backgrounds and all of the human
movements are true to the era in
>pirit much more than they are in
precise detail.
A Superb Portrayal
Hut the most important aspect of
"Queen Christina" is, of course, the
performance of Greta Garlio. Here
h.- has the opportunity for a richer
and wider range than ever before.
■ f unusual interest are the love scenes
between Miss Garito anil John Gil-
bert, who is ri united with the star
hi tin- picturc, anil whose scenes with
her are reminiscent of the tender epi-
inilc.s of such of their past successes
is "Flesh and the Devil" and "Wo-
man of Affairs."
Iiiii Keith, I a-wis Stone and Eliza-
beth "I oung also play important roles
in III, (I i ii inn. iintl the large support -
ing cast includes C. Aubrey Smith,
Kiinnaltl Owen, Georges Kenevcnt,
Duval Tonvme, Gustav Von Seyffer-
(117 and Ferdinand Munier.

Ford Leads In
Detroit Selling
DETROIT, Michigan.—In Wayne
County, Michigan, which includes De-
troit, home of the automobile industry,
sales of Ford V-8 cars in February
were more than three times as great
as those of any other make in the
low price field, it was revealed in
registration figures compiled by R.
L. Polk & Company.
During the 28 days of the month a
total of 2,208 Ford V-8s were sold in
the county, un official tabulation re-
vealed.
Wayne County registrations are
considered especially significant lie-
cause they are believed to reflect the
automotive buying trend for the en-
tire I'nited States.
The Dearborn Brunch re| oiled that
Ford dealers in the county have pre-
dicted an even larger figure for
March, basing their statements on an
increased demand evident in the first
few days of the month.
