UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEE L. WELSH, OF BROWNWOOD, TEXAS.
WAGON-STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,836, dated December 7, 1886.
Application filed September 16, 1886. Serial No. 213,688. (No model.)To all whonm it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE L. WELSH, a citi-
zen of the United States, residing at Brown-
wood, in the county of Brown and State of
5 Texas, have invented a new and useful Im-
provement in Wagon-Standards, of which the
following is a specification.
This invention relates to standards for wag-
ons, having for its. object the provision of an
lo article which shall be vertically adjustable to
adapt it to any and all sizes of wagon-bodies,
or for use in connection with an ordinary body
when it is provided with a large load.
To these ends the invention consists in the
15 construction, combination, and arrangement
of the several parts relatively to each other,
substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and
specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
2o a front view of a portion of a wagon-body
provided with my improved extension-stand-
ard. Fig. 2 is a transverse central sectional
view taken through the bolster and standards.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the lock-
25 ing device. Fig. 4 is anenlarged vertical sec-
tion.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the
bolster provided with standards B B, prefer-
ably mortised therein. The standards B are
30 hollow,and are provided with extensions C C,
which have vertical movement therein and
are provided on one side with rack-teeth or
serrations e, by means of which and the lock-
ing device, hereinafter described, the vertical
35 adjustment of the extension is effected.
D designates a gravitating-catch,consisting
of the pawl d, mountedon a trunnion, d',which
has bearings in the standard, and which is
provided with a weighted handle, d', disposed
40 at a right angle to the pawl proper, so thatwhen the handle is in a horizontal position
the pawl is in a vertical position, or pointing
upward. When released, however, gravity,
acting upon the weighted handle, causes the
same to fall and assume a vertical position, 45
which throws the pawl out into the groove in
which slides the extension C, so as to catch in
the rack-teeth of the latter.
The operation of my improved extension
being obvious hardly needs further descrip- 50
tion. When it becomes necessary to increase
the height of the standard, the extension is
simply elevated to the desired degree, the pawl
or rack slipping over the rack-teeth, when it
will be automatically locked at any point by 55
reason of the weighted handle d' on the shaflt
or trunnion of the pawl.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by
Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a hollow standard 60
and an extension having vertical movement
in said standard, of a gravity-catch adapted
to bite against teeth or serrations on said ex-
tension in order to maintain the same in an
extended position, substattiallyas and for the 65
purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with ahollow standard
and an extension having vertical movement in
said standard, of a pawl mounted in bearings
in the standard and a weighted handle con- 70
nected to the pawl, substantially as and for
the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
presence of two witnesses.
LEE L. WELSH.
