A new smoke slack has ar-
rived for tbe engine at the ice
plant. The old one was net of
good material from some cause
and has been going to pieces
and a new one had to be ordered.
Anday Richardson's saddle
horse ran away Sunday after-

ably. While tbe injuries are
not serious,' tbey were rather
painful.

Your money is scarce tbis

gratulations.
Friday tbe borse pulling tbe
delivery back of T. F. Gilley
took a kicking spell and tore
both shafts off. Tbe back was
at once earned to tbe blacksmith
shop to be repaired and another
back was borrowed while re-
pairs were being made, but
tbat afternoon tbe borse took
another spell of kicking nr^r
tbe round bale gin and kicking
both shafts from tbis back siso
enjoyed a rest while tbe repairs
were being made.
Inquiry at tbe county treas-
urer's office develops tbe fact
that taxes are being paid very
slowly, and a rush is not looked
for before after tbe first of Jan-
uary. One reason for this is
that with some $200,000 tied up in
cotton in tbe county, money Is
not quite as plentiful as it usually
is at this time of the year.
Since the passing of tbe stock
law and the necessity*for fences
no longer exists, many of tbe
fences of the city have been al-
lowed to fail iáto a bad state of
repair, detracting very much
from tbe appearance of tbe town.
If you do not want tbe fence,
why don't you take it down in-
stead of allowing it to rot away?
If you do want it, try and keej*
it looking like someone lived at
your bouse.
Wednesday morning there
was a very exciting runaway on
the court boase aquare. The
oíale hitched to a top buggy
of a colored man took fright at
something and ran making a
complete* circuit of the public
square. He then took flight to-;
wards tbe water works plant
and lelt tbe buggy bung on a ,
tree in front of tbe residence of j
John Jancik. The funny part
of tbe escapade was tbat tbe
mule took special precaution not
to run into any of tbe many ve-
hicles hitched on the square at
the time.
Tbe Caldwell oil mill has clone il
down for the season. Tbis year
tbe mill has crushed only 1300
ton of seed as against 9,00o
tons last year. Tbis shows the
enormous difference in tbe cotton
crops of tbis and las. year. The
mill gets seed from practically j
toe same territory every year, j
A shortage of 7,700 tons of teed
shows what a small crop of cot-
ton was made this year. Of
course the oil mill at Lydns re-
ceived some seed, but they
started late in the season and
we understand tbat tbat mill
has recéived"less than 1000 tons
for the season. «• >

The Baptist Fair.
Despite the very inclement
weather, which was sufficient to
have, discouraged lesa worthy
undertakings,, the Baptist Fair,
held in tbe building adjoining!
tbe Riley-Snook Furniture Store,
Wednesday was a decided suc-
cess. Tbe seven booths ar-
ranged in tbe building repre-
sented tbe seven ag£s of woman,
beginning with Infancy, presided
over by Mrs. L. H. Kilpatrick,
and wherein was found almost
everything tbat is necessary to
tbe well-being of tbe belplesslittle

Tbe Sweet Girl Graduate Booth

one, but owing to tbe very bad
weather and other reasons, was
not established. Then came the
Lovers' Bootb—needless to say
tbe moat attractive—at which
were displayed many of those
things that are given as tokens
of affection at tbis period of
life, and ably managed bv J. A.
Gray. The Wife'** Booth, over
which Mrs. J. W. Kag^dale pre-
sided, was very attractive and
'did a nice business. Tbe booths
tbat represented Mother and
Grandmother were u^der tba
