The weather for t'.;« past two
weeks has been a mixtureof rain,
sleet, snow and cold. Asa result,
many hogs have been put through
the bacon-making process, roads
are in bad condition and a good
season is in the ground.
From some cause or other, our
mail rider failed to show np Sat-
urday, and as a result the people
were cut short on reading matter.
Some excitement is manifested
among our people over the report
that smallpox haa made its ap-
pearance on Sixmile, about five
miles from here. It is the con-
census of opinion that something
should be done to prevent its get-
ting here. We are told there are
several cases at Gause.
Mr. Whitney, our broom maker,
informs us that, through the ef-
forts of some petty thief, he is
minus a number of brooms.
Owing to failure to find suffi-
cient evidence to place the crime
on any certain person, the party
guilty of burning Mr. Spradley's
barn has not been apprehended.
Andrew Sorrel, aged 30 years,
died here Saturday night, after
an illness of fourteen days. He
leaves a wife and six small chil-
dren to mourn his death. Dur-
ing his illness it became neces-
sary to resort to the surgeon's
knife, the operation being per-
formed by Drs. Oliver, Sparks,
Porter and Mays. The opera-
tion, so far as we are able to learn,
was successful in every reapect.
Deceased for several days before
his death was wholly unconscious,
recognizing none except, at times,
his wife. His aunt. Mrs. Martha
Clabarn, requests us to state that,
though he lived a wayward and
ungodly life, she has good reason
to believe that before death came
he repented of his sins and was
aaved; that before becoming un-
conscious and conatantly after-
warda be prayed very fervently
to the Lord for mercy. He wait
buried here Sunday evening, Rev
George conducting the servicaa.
