THE OUTLOOK
The unfavorable weather
that has visited this section
this vear has materially re-
duced the cotton crop; in
fact, it may he said that it is
almost an entire failure in
this part of the state, on ac>
count of the attacks of in-
sects, aided by unfavorable
weather conditions, which
not only militated against
the production of the plant,
but materially interfered with
the harvesting of the same.
The result of these condi-
tions is creating a hardship
on the tenant farmer, especi-
ally the colored farmer, who
will hardly be enabled to re-
alize a sufficient revenue from
his crop to meet his liabil-
ities. However, most farm-
ers, succeeded in raising a
good corn crop and have a
few head of cattle, hogs, poul-
try, etc., around them,which,
with exercise of judicious eco-
nomy willenable them to pull
through until they can raise
another crop, notwithstand-
ing the iuflated price of sup-
plies of all kinds.
This, taken iu considera-
tion with the unsettled con-
dition of business affair in
the country, is going to work
a hardship on the farmers
until another crop ha been
raised and mad ' ready for
the market.
The feverishness of business
affairs throughout the entire
world is having a disastious
effect, and until things settle
down and assume a more en-
couraging shape but little
improvement need be ex-
pected in this country.
The Federal government
announces its intention of
returning the control ol the
railways ol the country to
the corporations to which
they belong on the first clay
of December, and it is to he
hoped that this needed im-
provement in their operation
may be secured with the lenst
possible delay.
President Wilson has desig-
nated Nov. 27 a« Thanksgiv-
ing day, and hopes that the
day will be generally ob
served by the American peo
pie, as they have much to be
thankful for.
SMALL INDUSTRIES
The advantages accruing
to a town by the pattonage
aud encouragement of small
industries is of more than or-
dinary importance. In fact,
the more aniall industries a
town has the more prosper-
ous becomes the community,
as they soon become import-
ant trade attractors. No town
or village can ever hope to
gain much headway in a bus-
iness way without the assist-
ance of local enterprises that
are backed by men of push
and energy, hence the neces-
sity of not only patronizing
liberally these "trade get-
ters," thereby helping to ad-
vance these enterprises to do
so much to advance the
growth and advance the pros-
perity of the locality in which
they happen to be located.
Co-operation in such matters
in the establishment and
operation ot small industries
is of the utmost importance
in order to reap the full hen-
fits that should accrue to a
community Irom their estab-
lishment and opperation. As
a town prospers and flour-
ishes as its business interests
increase. The attraction of
trade to a town is a matter of
prime importance. To se-
cure this desired end is there-
fore the chief aim of every
good citizen who has the
best interest of his home
t' wn at heart, This much
desired object can more eas-
ily be acquired by the adopt-
ion aud rigid practice of co-
operation, backed by a full
determination to help and
a-sist all deserving enter-
prises that cast their lots in
this commuuity.
Quite a number of Italian
laborers in this country are
reported to have applied to
the government for passpoits
permitting them to return to
Italy on account of the strin-
gency of oupprohibition law s.
Let them go. Joy go with
them and peace behind them.
Uncle Sam could very easily
spare several thousand inore
ot her inongrehzed citizen-
ship in like manner, without
inconveniencing the country
in any manner whatever.
America for Americans
should be our motto.
Many Texas formers are
now devoting more attention
to the raising of n sufficient
number ot livestock meat
animals not only to supply
the home demand, but with
-"•me to spar?. This is a wise
move, one that should be
more generally practiced by
American farmers, especi-
ally at this time when family
supplies command such high
prices, besides it helps to re-
duce operating expenses, as
well as supplying the neces-
saries of life at a minimu n
