Tke War Tank Was
Here Last Friday
The War Tank promised to
visit Caldwell 8aturday of lout
week, which failed to arrive on
account of being broke down at ¡
Navasota, came in last Friday
and spent the day here on the
public square, giving many de-
monstrations of its manuevers
and was viewed by many people.
The school children were turned
out and given a chance to come
and look at the great lighting
machine and they crawled all
over it, and were given every
oivportunity to learn of its work-
ings, each detail of it was ex-
plained by tho two army officers
in charge, and the machine was
turned loose on Buck street and
lining at pretty good speed when
:ill at once, before you could
turn yourself around, it would
1 be wheeled round and be going
I in the opposite direction. It. is
' a wonderful piece of machinery
and one must see it to realize it
power in destruction of the en-
emy. It was operated by two
men who men sit on the inside
and looKcd out thiough small
holes and tired from machine
guns on the inside at the enemy,
while they an* protected from
tire by .steel armor around them.
The machine uses a catapiller
tract of its own and noes up and
down hills and over any kind of
rough ground without much ef-
fort. Judge Hiiiiard made a
strong speech from the tank in
front of Cobb's store, appealing
to the people to support the
Victory Liberty Ix>an drive now
on. The Tank left on the H &
T. C., in the afternoon for
Hearne and other points. It was
a pity that we did not have time
to notify the people in the rural
parts of the county in time for
them to Inve seen the War
Tank, but it was impossible, as
it was not. known here until a
few hours before it arrived.
In the Victory Loan campaign
up to «lute the railroad men at
Somervilli? are doing tine, buy-
ing their quota right along,
while around Caldwell and
throughout the county, the
farmers arc holding back, and
are way behind. Come on today
and bvy your part: surely you
want to be 100 per cent Ameri-
can.

The Caldwell National Bank
Serious Shooting
on Cedar Creek
Thursday afternoon last I^ee
Williams shot Aaron Norcross
with a pistol, the ball entering
the back of the neck and coming
out of Norcross' mouth, knock-
ing out his teeth and making an
ugly wound in his juv. Dr.
Sherrill was summoned from
Cooke's Point and gave the in-
jured man medical treatment,
and at last reports he was hold-
ing his own witli a fair chance
to recover.
The shooting took place at the
home of Gould Lightsey, where
Norcross was visiting.
It is said the trouble was the
result of Norcross insulting Mrs.
Williams, Lee's wife, about a
week previous to the shooting,
and when fie learned that Nor-
cross had gone to Lightsey s
home, he. with his brother,
brother-in-law and another party
got in an auto and went to Light-
sey's house*, and called Norcross
out, and when lie came out Lee
shot him. Williams came on to
town surrendered and vas re-
leased on bond to await the out-
come of Norcross' wound.
First Ball Game
The first base ball ga;no of
the season to be played on the
home diamond was played last
Friday, when Caldwell and
Bryan crossed bats, and while
the score was 1 ¡Í - in favov of
the visitors, the game was in-
teresting after the first few in-
nings. Both teams showed
much enthusiasm and worked
hard to win, but as they have
not been practicing any length
of time, neither team had had
an opportunity to get down to
ball playing. The Bryan boys
are a fine lot of young fellows
and our boys will shortly go
over there and play another
game with them, which we hope
to win, thus evening up scores.
There were a fair crowd out to
see the game; however, there
should have been twice as many
present. If you don't support
your home boys you can not ex-
pect them to succeed. Go out
to see every game played 1*11 the
home diamond and show the
boys you are with them.
County Court
County court convened Mon-
day morning with Judge Milliard
011 the bunch and County Attor-
ney Hays Bowers representing
tho state. The docket was very
light in criminal cases as well
as civil matters which the court
took up Wednesday, hearing
some administration and guardi
anship matters.

Eggs
in your baking by using
ROYAL
Baking Powder
In many recipes only half as many
eggs are required, in some none at
all, if an additional quantity of Royal
Balling Powder is used—about a tea-
spoon, in place of each egg omitted.
Try this method with all your bak-
ing recipes. Thousands of women
are using it with great success.
