Two Negroes Shot
Two Others Escape.
Last Friday morning early on
the James Place in the Brazos
bottom, there was a dispute be-
tween two negroes, Nathan
Hill and Will Hawkins, over a
remark made by Hawkins to a
woman, which was resented by
Hill, who went away and got a
shot gun and came back, in the
mean, time Hawkins had went to
the house and got his shot gun,
and when Hill came back, both
began to squabble, and Nelse
Hill, a half brother of Nath
came up, and then Will Daniels,
another negro working on the
place, got his sixshooter, and
joined in the trouble. But after
some discussion the first two
negroes made friends an 1 drop
t>ed the trouble temporarily, but
before they sej)arated, brought
it up aeain, which resulted in
#
Nathan Hill shooting Will Haw-
kins in the side an I arm, knock,
lng his shotgun out of his hand,
and as it fell Nelse Hill, his
brother grabbed it, and cut
down on Will Daniels, who had a
sixshooter, but who was making
his getaway when fired on, re-
ceiving a load of shot from the
gun in arm and side toward the
back. The two Hills were not in-
jured and made their esca¡)e,
going toward Mumford.
Sheriff Ellis was notified and
went to the scene at once, find-
ing Hawkins lying wounded bad-
ly in a field and Daniels slightly
wounded. Constable McCasland
had arrested Daniels and the
Sheriff brought him to town and
placed him in jail. Hawkins was
allowed to lye where he was
shot without any attention from
his friends until Sheriff Ellis
arrived and compelled them to
do something for him. At last
reports he was alive, but dan
gerously injured. It is thought
the Hills will be captured soon
as officers are on the lookout for
them.

The Gee Spring Union
Camp Meeting.
At a colored supper in Preid
man town Saturday night one
Bill Smith became angered at
his wife and began to beat her
up and a woman Martha Turner
interfered in an effort to separ
ate them, when Hill wheeled on
her pulling a razor and slashed
her several times before he was
stopped. A physician was sum-
moned and took thirty five
stitches in the woman's side and
breast to close the wounds, and
at lust accounts she was doing
very well. Smith was lodged in
jail on a charge of assault to
murder. All parties are negroes
and live on the Hilliard farm
four miles south of town.
Pursuant to a call there was a
meeting of. the Camp Meeting
Committee held Saturday for the
purpose of deciding on the date
of holding the meeting and at-
tend to such other matters per-
taining to it as were necessary,
and it was decided that the meet-
ing would be held beginning Jhe
1st Sunday in August and that it
would be a Union meeting under
the direct supervision of Revs.
L. J. Power and M. C. Bishop,
assisted by Rev. W. W. Smith of
Rosenberg, who have charge of
the singing, and preach if neces-
sary. It was also unanimously
agreed to request the various
churches throughout the county
to arrange their meetings so as
to not conflict with the Gee
Springs meeting.
P. H. Hitchcock, T. W. Park-
hill and W. W. Rankin were ap-
pointed a committee to let the
restaurant and lemona le stand
during the meeting and anyone
wishing to obtain same can see
either of them.
It was also decided to meet at
the Camp Ground on Thursday,
July 27th, and clean up tlvje
grounds and put things in shape
for the meeting. Everyone is
cordially invited to come out
and take part in the Camp Meet-
