The raising «>f blooded chickens
is now attracting about a?- much
interest among farmers as cattle
and hogs.
The man who gets mad at what
the newspaper s ys about him
should return thanks three titles a
day for what the newspaper knew
about him and suppressed.
Learned men tell u* that in Lat n
the word "editor" means somethii g
"eat." In the United States its
meaning is altogether different. It
mean* to scratch around like blazes
to get something to eait.
Start your chifdern right by seeing
that they attend school from the
beginning to the end of the term.
You owe them a good educati n
and they can get it if >ou see
that they are in school.
The summer is past and soon t1 e
last month of autum will be here
A few more weeks and we will be
in midwinter Whatsoever thy hands
finds to do, do it with thy might.
The predictions are another cold
winter, with abundance <>f snow;
and that Jack 'Frost may not
torment us and deprive us wholly
of comfort, we should prepare to
withstand him. But a few more
dnvs are left us; let us wisely
improve them.
A county superintendent in a
neighboring county asked every
teacher at the county institute who
took their local or county paper
to hold up their hands and only
six responded. The superintendant
expressed great surprise and said:
"You don't spend a dollar a year
with those papers, yet you expect
them to advertise you, thus assist-
ing you to climb the ladder to bet-
ter salaries, without a cent in re-
turn.
If you ore a kicker and see the
shadows of failure in everything
that is proponed to help the town,
for heavens sake go into some se-
cluded canyon and kick your own
shadow on the clay bank, and give
the men who are working to build
tip the town a chance. One long
faced hollow-eyed, whining, carp-
ing, chronic kicker can do more to
keep away buisness and capital
from a town than all the drouths,
abort crops, chinch bugs, cyclones
and bltenrd combi
AN ESSAY ON MAN.
Man that is bom « f woman is a
sinali potato and few in a hill. He
rises up today aud flourisheth like
a tug weed and tomorrow or the
next day the undertaker h ith him.
He g«>eth forth in the mo ning
warbling like a lark and is kn ocked
out in one round and two sec >nds.
In the midst of life he is in
debt and th* tax collector pursues
him wherever he goeth. Thebm-
uijster of life is 'ull of splinters and
he slideth down with considerable
rapidity. He walketh forth in the
bright sunligth.to absorb the ozone
and tneeteth the bank teller with a
sight draft for $357. He come h
home at eventide and meeteth the
wheelbarrow in his path. It tiseth
up and smiteth him to the eaith
and falleth upon him, and runneth
one of its legs into his ear. In the
gentle spring time he putteth on
his summer cl«>the , and a blizzard
striketh bim and si t* tn upon him
He buyeth a watch dog and wheo
he cometh home fr in the lodge the
watch dog treeth him, and sitteth
near him until losy morn. He goeth
to the horse trot and betteth his
money on the brown mare, and the
bay gelding with a b aze face wii.-
neth.
He marrieth a red-headed heir ss
witii a wart on her no^-e, and the
next day the parent ancester uoeth
under with a fee arrest and great
liabilities and c< meth home to live
with his beloved son-in-law.
GET RICH SCHEMES.
If we are to judu'e by the thousands
of people who are being daily
swindled by the get rich schemes
that infest the country, the Ameri-
can people are becoming particu-
larly easy. Almost every large
city seems to be a fruitful field for
the swindlers operation, and the
po>r dupes almost tumble over
each other in their effort to tret
something for nothing or fabulous
returns for a small outlay, which
anyone of average intelligence
ought to know was a swindler with-
out being apprised of the fact.
Aside from this the country press
is continually warning the people
of those swindling operations and
pubishing reports of the thousands
who have learned by J.-ar ex-
perience of the fraudulent nature of
so many concerns in which they
have intrusted their all. We would
say it serves them right were it not
for the fact that the victims in
many case are poor people who can
ill afford to lose their daily earn-
ings in this manner.
There are many striking examples
of the value of good road roads.
When ever roads have been
permanently improved it is found
that there has been a very great
increase in value of the adjacent
property.
