WANTED TO ADVISE CAPTAIN
Cranky Paaeenger Thought He Knew
More About the Ship Than Did
the Chief Officer.
"Panic, more or leas suppressed,
leizes ntany passengers on an ocean
liner when anything out of the ordi-
nary happens," said the ship's offi-
cer. "Often they are cranks who
*eem to be obsessed with the belief
that their opinions will help navigate
the ship, and who pursue the engi-
neer or the captain with incessant
advice.
"On our last trip, which was very
rough, one old gentleman tried to
reach the bridge where the captain
was, and had to be halted by force.
M<But I want to ask the captain
i bout the crew,' he fumed. 'Is the
:rew trustworthy? What shall we
do if we sink ? What shall I tell my
wife?
"Two sailors were detailed to take
him below with instructions to re-
main and answer his questions.
"When we reached port his first
act was to call on the president of
the steamship company for the pur-
pose of giving notice that he would
never travel on another ship of their
lines. Said he:
"'It was only by a miracle that
my of your passengers reached port
at all. In the midst of all that
storm, with the sea threatening to
swallow us all, your captain slunk
away where not a soul could reach
him.

Overwhelming Victory of the Greeks
Over the Persian* Marked 6ea
Conflict Centuries Ago.
The first great and decisive naval
battle in history was fought at Sala-
mis, between the Greek and Persian
fleets, 2.3113 years ago, 480 B. C.
Themistocle , the Athenian com-
mander, had 3G6 vessels to oppose
the Persian heet of nearly 2,000 sail.
Facing such a superior force, most of
the Greeks wanted to sail away, but
Themistocles was determined upon
immediate battle. He sent word to
Xerxes, the Persian king, informing
him that the Greek fleet would at-
tempt to escape, and advising him to
gtiard both ends of the strait. The
Persian monarch followed this ad-
vice, and the Greeks, "bottled up,"
were forced to fight. The battle be-
gan earlv in the morning and con-
tinued throughout the day. The Per-
sian king, who hoped to make Greece
a province of Persia as the fruit of
the conflict, "sat on the rocky brow
which looks o'er seaborn Salamis,"
and gazed down to "where ships bv
thousands lay below." Byron con-
tinues: "He counted them at break
of day, and when the sun set where
were they?" The Greeks were com-
pletely victorious, and on the day
after the battle the bay was covered
with the wm-ks of Asia's fleet.
GORILLA AIRSHIP PAS8ENGER.
A gorilla flew as a passenger in an
aeroplane from Straaburg to Metas
the other day. The animal is the pet
of a German military ainuan, who
acted as pilot. The ape at first re-
fused to be tied into the maehine,
but submitted after some persuasion.
Throughout the flight he screamed
and trembled, and when the machine
landed he was so paralyzed from
fright that he had to be helped out of
the passenger's seat.
POINT OF VIEW.
" Tis only a goat." murmured the
man, as he strode into the strange
farm.
" 'Tis butt a man," retorted the
goat, as ho went at it in a business
way.
NOT SENSITIVE.
Patience—Does Fred take notice
when you. drop a hint?
Patrice Why. he wouldn't take
notice if you dropped one on his foot.
TOO TRUE.
Redil—One swallow does not make
a summer, you know.
Greene—Perhaps not, but some
birdmen make one fall, and only oue.
LITTLE DANGER.
"I)o you run across many people
in your country auto trips?"
"Not now. Most of them are used
to getting out of the way."
EXCEPTION.
"Your husband always has his
bammer out, hasn't he?"
"Yea,, except when it is time to
pat down the carpets.**
