Flattering Tribute
To Voolrow Wilson
ATrOKNKY-AT-l,AW AM) NOTAftV mTMLIC
Friday night there was given
in the opera house a grand rally
ia honor of Woodrow Wilson.
The affair had been pretty well
advertised and the opera house
was literally packed with ardent
supporters of the Democratic
Party's standard bearer. The
following program which had
been previously arranged and
well prepared, wus carried out.
Reading. Viola Houston, Read-
ing, .Tommie J. Newcomb and
Evelyn Hill; 8peech, Jesse Gar-
rett; Vocal solo, Miss Kate
Hundley; Speech, which consist
ed of reading Wilson's speech to
the American people, by Rev. J.
W. Goodwin; 8peech by Hon. J.
C. Jones; Vocal solo, Misa
Maude James. Kvery number
on the program was well render-
ed and elicited great applause,
showing that not only was the
program well prepared and well
rendered, but that the Demo-
cratic nominee for President is
immensely popular with all
oiasses of people here. Hie pop-
ularity at this place can be read-
ily understood, when it will be
remembered that some time ago
when it wiis proposed to send a
contribution from Caldwell to
his campaign fund, the sum of
*75.00 was r;ust d in a few mm-
utps and far warded to the proper
quarters.

Last Saturday the young
young white man, giving his
name as Walter Tucker, had an
examining trial on a charge of
attempting to burglarise the
residence of L. Seigle the night
of the show, and be was bound
over to await the action of the
grand jury in the sum of #250,
which he has been unable to
give. He says bo is a native of
England where bis home now
is, and where he has a wife and
ohildren. He corroborates his
statement by showing receipts
for money sent his wife and
children. He says he is not
guilty of attempted burglarry,
and, it is udinitted that there is
not very much evidence that he
was trying to get in the house.
His case will come up in the
November term of District oourt,
if it comes up at all.

Last Thursday while the ex-
amining trials of Rosie Brooks
and Avery Mack were in pro-
gress, the pistol of Deputy Dick
Faiu fell out of his pocket and
when it hit the floor the con-
cussion caused it to be discharg-
ed, the ball entering the metal
ceiling over head and making
one more hole in it. The shot
created consternation for the
time being, ai}d people came
rushing into the court room be-
lieving that a big shooting
scrape was being pulled off.
Fortunately, however, the ball
did not hit anyone, thought it
passed painfully near Ed. Ellis'
head.
Bonds Fixed in
Murder Case
Lnst Friday Rosie Brooks
and Avery Mack, both colored,
had their examining trials on
charges of killing Walter Cosby
on the 8aturday night before.
The bond of the Brooks woman
was tixedat f1,000 and that of
the man at S500 neither of which
had been made at last accounts.
It seems the thrse negroes were
walking along the public road
and that the two men got into a
squabble over the woman as to
which should have the honor of
going home with her and the
Cosby negro was stabbed with a
knife from the effects of which
he died in a very few minutes.
The man saya the woman did it
and the woman says the man did
it. It is admitted however, that
the man gave the woman the
knife with which the stabbing
was done.

Progressive Conservatism
The keystone of a bank's success it
This hank la managed with intelligent con-
servatism—not the kind which pinches the
pennies, but the kind that protects nnd con-
serves its resources by careful investments,
which have first been exhaustively investigated.
That such a policy is a wise one is seen in the
splendid patronage that we have been given,
as indicated by our growth in deposits.
e expect to continue to grow steadily as in
e past, and we cordially invite your business
if you believe with us, that a bank should be
"Progressively conservative.**
We will welcome a personal interview with
you.

Supposed Dead Maiw
Returns in Time
Laredo, Texas, Oct. 28—Jaun
Roque will be set free today,
after a startling experience of
how an innocent man may be ac-
cused.
Roque was arrested, charged
with the murder of Apoiihar
Donada, an aged ranchman,
who disappeared from his place
north of* here on August 23.
The police claimed they had a
confession from Roque and that
the stories of two women on
Donada's place corroborated
this confession, Roque, they
said, confessed he had buried the
body, but when they took him to
the ranch he tried to esoape, and
later declared he did not bury
the body but threw it in a sack
into the Rio Grande.
Yesterday Donada, the alleged
dead man, appeared at the jail
here, incensed st reports of his
dssth and because ths police had
his ranch foreman In jail. He
said he put Roque in charge of
his place while he himself wsnt
into the interior to piok cotton.

with him Opie Miller who is to
be tried there on a charge of
horse theft. It will be remem-
bered that some months ago
Miller was bound over here to
await the action of the Burleson
county grand jury, but as the
offense was committed in Lee
county, and the negro brought
the animal here and tried to sell
him this gave either county
jurisdiction. Court is now in
session ut biddings and the
court there decided th t they
would take the negro over there
