How the Qraat Writer Rewarded the
Chiffonnler Who Had Found
Hia Loot Spoon.
A Paris chiffounier makes a living
of a sort, and he sometimes, in over-
hauling the dustbins, comes across a.
find. In this respect a Paris contem-
porary relates a capital story of Vic-
tor Hugo. A little silver gilt sou-
venir spoon, which the poet valued
very much, disappeared. Through
the carelessness of the maid servant
it had found its way into the ash
bucket, and in due course into the
hrmils of the chiffonnier who prac-
ticed in the district.
This worthy succeeded in getting
the poet to : . ¡ike from liis reveries
ami to descend from the lofty heights
of Olvmpus, in other words his
study, to receive back the lost spoon.
11 ü>ro was delighted to get hack his
souvenir. The author of "Jlernani"
was never n prodigal, so he rewarded
the chifTonnier by presenting him
with a copy of his "Les Chansons
<li ' Hues et des Sois," saving:
"There, my man, you will f!:t«i in it

TO WRITE DETECTIVE TALES
C. K. Chesterton, Who Does Them
Himself, Gives Recipe for This
Class of Stories.
For ft man who writes detective
stories (i. K. Chesterton maintains
.1 painfully skeptical attitude toufird
ti•••111. Hi re is "(i. K. C.'s" recipe
for the writing of tins kind of litera-
ture, as given in the Illustrated Lon-
don News:
"1 like detective stories; 1 read
them, I write them; hut 1 do not lie-
ln-ve them. The bones and structure
of a good detective story are so old
and well known that it may seem
banal to state them even in outline.
A policeman, stupid but sweet-tem-
pered, and always weakly erring on
the side of mercy, walks along the
street, and in the course of his or-
dinary business finds a man in Bul-
garian uniform killed with an Aus-
tralian boomerang in a Hrompton
milk shop. Having set free all the
most suspicous persons in the story,
lie then appeal* to the bulldog pro-
fessional detective, who appeals to
the hawklike amateur detective.
"The latter finds near the corpse
a bootlace, a button boot, a French
newspaper, and a return ticket from
the Hebrides, and so, relentlessly,
link by link, brings the crime home
io the archbishop of Canterbury."

bullet which has struck a woven fab-
ric bears an impression of the
threads, which is recognizable even
tvhen the bullet has perforated the
clothing and penetrated deeply into
the body, and is only obliterated
partially or entirely, when the bul-
let has been flattened by striking a
bone or a metallic object. In order
to obtain impressions for compari-
son with the impression found on a
suspected bullet a piece of the fabric
is stretched over a smooth board and
fired at with bullets similar to the
bullet found, if possible with the
weapon which the criminal ia aup-
posed to have used. A comparison
of the bullets may often lead to th«
perpetrator of a crime.
THE ARTIST AT WORK.
Two well dressed women waiting;
for a car at Broadway and Fortv-
sccond street the other afternoon
were discussing the son of one.
"You wanted him to he a pianist,
didn't you?" his mother was asked
by the other woman.
"Yes," she replied. "We spent a
great deal of money to that end. He
had several of the finest teachers in
New York."
"Did he ever do anything with his
music ?"
The mother smiled faintly. "Yes,"
she su id ; "he's out west now playing

BALLOT VER8U8 THE ICEBOX.
Somebody asked Mrs. Theodore
Roberts if she didn't want to cleanse
the ballot. She answered:
"Not so long as I can clean out

This little talk came at the open-
ing of the Club of Domestic Science
with a food expert in the chair and
f(..vl specialties everywhere.
Mrs. Roberts likes old fashioned
wins of doing things. She doesn't
think the state ought to wash the
baby's face and rear the child.—
