Residence Burned.
The ten room residence of G.
W. Lea was burned Monday
morning about ]U o'clock togeth-
er with nearly every thing in it.
When the fire whistle gave the
alarm, the flames had gained
such headway that thtre was no
possible way to save the build-
ing, aa there was no tire plug
near enough for the hose to
reach the tire. There was a large
crowd of people on the scene at
once, and most of the furniture
in the two front rooms was sav-
ed, but much of it was more or
less damaged by the hasty man-
ner in which it had to be remov-
ed. Miss Bessie who has been
teaching school for the past year
at Birch lost all the money she
had saved up as well as the
voucher for the last month
which she had not had cashed,
but she enn have a duplicate and
get the money. The origin of
the tire is uncertain, but it is be-
lieved to have started in some
way from a fire place near the
1 center of the building or from a j
line. The building was worth
about $3000 and on this there
wa« $2000 insurance. The furni-
ture was worth something over
$1<)00 and on this there wa> $.~ 00
insurance. But the insurance
will nothing like replace what
was lost.
fortunately, the wind was
from the southwest ami no other
buddings were endangered. Had
the wind been from the north,

the fact that more fire plmrs and
more hose are needed for the

Burleson Guards Inspected
Capt. W. E. Hunt of the 22nd
U. S, Infantry was here on Mon-
day the 27th and inspected the
Burleson Guards (Co. K, Sepa-
rate Batallioo). There was a
full attendance of the men and
officers and the company made a
fine appearance on the North side
of t he court bouse square where
the inspection took place. It is
said that the company stood one
of the best inspections that has
yet taken place in the state. In
case of eventualities they will not
have to be hunted out of the
woods.

who has the ricrht of way as be-
tween vehicles, automobiles and
bicycles. For the benefit of the
public we will say that all con
veyences. whether wagons, bug-
gies, carts, automobiles or bicy-
cles when meeting have a right
to one half of the highway and
should turn to the right when
passing. Of course, politeness
requires that the lighter convey-
ance should show courtesy to
ones heavily loaded or driven by
women and children.
